Grabbed my full local copy of Wikipedia yesterday via @kiwix on the advice of @Em0nM4stodon. It's surprisingly easy and their macOS client is really slick!

I ALSO really don't want to make it, I don't want to be the arbitor of shitheads. 🙃
1000 bonus points for whomever does if you also put web archives in it so bad tweets are preserved forever.

I want a PrivacyGuides style website for companies & business folks that have come out in support of authoritarians / general political ratfuckery. There are likely going to be more of these jerks as things progress over the next few years and I would rather not give them my money... But keeping track of who's who and what's what is just going to get more exhausting.

Adding things to Wikidata scratches a similar itch as my OpenStreetMap hobby, which is almost concerningly nerdy.
Has anything particularly cool besides Wikipedia been created using Wikidata? Initial Google searches return "maybe Siri and Alexa use it" which isn't all that neat. Feels under-utilized?

This also wouldn't have been possible without the help of @jamaps who kindly met up with me for coffee earlier this year and gave me a quick QGIS tutorial.
Thanks Jeff!

One of the projects I completed during my time off in December was this Christmas gift for my partner Liza showcasing our time in Ireland earlier this year. The orange line is our location, tracked with Arc. The map was created with OSM data in QGIS and plotted in Inkscape with @wxs's Axidraw plotter.

Looks like Pandoc via ODT is the way to go (as usual). The formatting requires some correction (applying proper paragraph styles so things like quotes render properly to Typst), but I was able to get through all of this chapter in a night! The workflow is already coming together 😎

Update to this! I've continued ripping files. A bunch of the disks have this virus, have yet to find a solution for those, but I've run across some that don't and their files export perfectly from HxC! This pretty much confirms the first record being the issue.
These documents were written with WordPerfect, something that LibreOffice seems to have excellent support for! Now I just need to figure out the best way of getting this into Typst! :)

"HP's ImageZone software: a review It's junk. crap. garbage. drivel. worthless.
cow-orker-esque. DEC marketing-like. [...] I made the major mistake of installing this when I installed a higher-end photo quality printer (HP Photosmart 8450) on my system along with the scanner. After an hour of fighting with it (trying to scan and crop ten pages of text) I finally had to uninstall it. And since you are reading this, it obviously really pissed me off. "

Apple working with Nvidia in any capacity wasn't on my 2024 bingo card, wouldn't be surprised if hell froze over next.

Between 2009 and 2012, iPhones had a built-in "Send to YouTube" button in the Photos app. Many of these uploads kept their default IMG_XXXX filenames, creating a time capsule of raw, unedited moments from random lives.
Inspired by Ben Wallace, I made a bot that crawled YouTube and found 5 million of these videos! Watch them below, ordered randomly.

On November 1, the day after the last day, I took a walk around the perimeter fence and peered in at the building. I felt ashamed. The government had been so afraid of us. They thought we’d fight and rally there. They thought we’d bust our way in. They thought that the kidnapping and murder of this institution—this centennial-year gift that was ours—would bring us out in force, and make us fierce. Oh, how we disappointed.
