Over the break I read “The Year of the Oath,” a firsthand account of the #scandal and machinations around the McCarthyist attempt (1949–1950) to have all #University of #California faculty swear not to be #communist.

Neither side in this debate could declare total victory. However, the faculty took stands and obtained the support of ½ of the Board of Regents, and the oath as proposed was withdrawn.

Similar events could possibly recur, so let's consider this episode a sort of prototype.

I was entertained today to run into Russia's Resolution No. 111 of 1998/2005, which prohibits all #radio transmitters past 9kHz, plus devices for covert ends: the receipt and recording of acoustic information, visual observation and documentation, wiretapping of telephone conversations, interception & recording of information from technical communication channels, control over the movement of vehicles & other objects, inspection of premises, vehicles & other objects.

Hi folks. Trying to install Debian on a new machine. What does it mean when the bootloader Installer menu works properly, but then the kernel immediately crashes the machine instead of booting?

Specifics: Thinkpad X13s, Snapdragon 8cx gen. 3, several recent versions of arm64 netinst ISO. Yes, I have upgraded the machine's BIOS and added the arm64.nopauth kernel option.
