I missed this last week, but the other two Hayes brothers got well-deserved jail sentences for their psychopathic assault on a former friend. The account of the attack makes their brother Kyle sound positively minor league.

I just got an email from IPUMS declaring that despite all the EOs:

"We are writing to reassure you that IPUMS data remain available, and that IPUMS remains committed to preserving and democratizing access to the world’s population data."

BBC Radio 3 went silent for me the other day (on my jury-rigged Raspberry Pi python headless streaming set up).

The secret URL has changed. These guys are on it, though.

How long before

1: protesters hit the streets in numbers, and

2: start to get killed (by Proud Boys, entitled car drivers, the state)?

I've had a bad feeling ever since Obama failed to get his Supreme Court pick appointed, but I think America (as we knew it) is gone now.

Purging the FBI, cancelling spending, giving Musk the keys to the cash machine, banning "DEI" nationally, starting trade wars, proposing concentration camps, purging Black & female leaders in the civil service and armed forces, firing prosecutors, firing Inspectors General...all illegal but confident that any real challenges will get to SCOTUS and be rejected

"Earlier this month, when Elon Musk made a gesture at Donald Trump’s post-inauguration event that forced copyeditors globally into pretzeling contortions trying to avoid describing it as a Nazi salute, it wasn’t all that out of character for the tech billionaire."

Spot the self-referential pretzel.

You could not have a more Mastodon post.

It wouldn't work on Bluesky, and not just because of character length.

Re the #emacs org-mode export: The only change I needed to make to the output was to add this header:

[#]+LaTeX_CLASS_OPTIONS: [a4paper, 10pt]

[#]+options: toc:nil

I've given DeepSeek my intro quants methods test and it's passed with flying colours.

Even better, the output is #emacs org-mode/pdflatex-export compatible with no-to-minimal change.

Question:

Given a mean of 10 and a standard deviation of 1.23, in a sample of 1000, calculate a 95 percent confidence interval

Answer: see org-mode export in image

Conclusion: I'll need to move to pen & paper exams...

A week or so in, don't people realise that this (and everything else) is what a "dictator from day 1" looks like?

"Inquiries, such as the Saville Inquiry (completed in 2010), concluded that the killings were unjustified and that the victims posed no threat. The event had a profound impact on the conflict, deepening divisions and fueling support for the Irish Republican movement.

Let me know if you'd like more details or context!" 3/3

"The Paratroop Regiment was deployed to maintain order during the march, which had been organized to protest internment without trial. However, the situation escalated, and the soldiers fired live ammunition into the crowd. The incident remains one of the most controversial and painful moments in the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland." 2/3

"Hello! It seems like you're asking about the Paratroop Regiment's role in Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday refers to the tragic events that took place on January 30, 1972, in Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland, when British soldiers from the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment, opened fire during a civil rights march, killing 13 unarmed civilians and injuring many others." 1/3

Since DeepSeek apparently won't talk about Tiananmen Square, I asked it about Bloody Sunday (I recall Edward Heath drawing equivalences between the two events...) 0/3
