For the recent arrivals... I recommend following some hashtags to get you going.
Yes you can follow hashtags here, and it's a great way to "find your people"!
Here's a nice little article from @FediTips about how to do it:
https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-follow-hashtags-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/
Following some hashtags will bring into your feed a variety of people with similar interests. And then you can individually follow some of those. (To get a lively feed, maybe follow somewhere around 300 people eventually.)

Liking this little thread from @dentangle. "Don't let them colonise our namespaces" is a good way of putting it.

If I understand correctly, #FreeOurFeeds is a project to build a sort of Bluesky-twin, which in theory would make it easier to leave Bluesky should the need arise.
Here's a useful post from @shellsharks about the limitations of doing that:

For example...
• Make flu jabs & covid jabs free for anyone who wants them
• Mandate & fund minimum air quality in hospitals & public buildings
• Mandate & provide FFP3 respi masks in all medical settings
• Fund sick pay for 10 days after a positive covid test
• Subsidise Pluslife quick testing units, or similar, for schools and medical settings
Probably all of that put together would still be cheaper than not doing it!

"Royal College of Nursing says people ‘routinely coming to harm’ with vital equipment not available and staff too busy
"... the NHS is grappling with one of the worst winter crises in its history. In recent weeks about 20 hospital trusts in England have declared a “critical incident” – an admission that they cannot cope with the demand for care and need help."
Well maybe try not recklessly letting covid and flu run wild across the country!

New article (from yesterday) describes the symptoms & treatment of the 13-year-old in British Columbia who caught H5N1 2.3.4.4b, & developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Feeling for the kid who went through all that. Looks like it'll take her a long time to recover fully, if she ever does.

Interesting interview with Dr Arijit Chakravarty, who doesn't mince his words about covid-denial foolishness! With some cool geekery about viral evolution.

People who know about covid testing, specifically #Pluslife:
You know how PCR testing continues to pick up non-viable fragments for (maybe) 60 to 90 days... well, does that apply to the Pluslife tests too? A friend just had covid & now wants to establish when they're safely non-infectious again. Are we right in guessing that the Pluslife isn't useful for that, for the above-described reason? Or is its method sufficiently different that it would ignore fragments?

"Feelings are information. Stop talking yourself into or out of your feelings. ... start listening to what your actual feelings are trying to tell you. Not every feeling is helpful or needs to be acted upon, but good news, you can decide what you want to do about your feelings later, as its own separate step! Just, it’s very hard to both make good decisions about a feeling and talk yourself out of having that feeling at the same time."

Feeling pretty apprehensive about the bureaucracy & legal risk implied by the UK's new Online Safety Act, starting March 2025. Thanks to everyone currently working on figuring out what it means, and/or raising its risk with their MPs.

Hey folks, I wonder if the power of the Fedi network can help me here.
I've been giving some more thought to the possibility of creating covid-careful social &/or musical events near where I live.
Is there someone out there who shares my care for people still shielding, AND knows a lot about grants and the funding landscape in England? They wouldn't necessarily have to live anywhere near me - we could confer from a distance.
Boosts & connections very welcome!
