Really bad migraine day (with nausea - wheeee!) (apparently, period + too much work + extremely sunny day after grey winter weather = migraine from hell. ugh). But I had awesome naps on my super cozy red couch and later on ordered some books with Chinese piano music to cheer myself up.

When I got home from the office today, I found a surprise package waiting for me: Somebody I first met at a romance readers convention in Berlin 13 years ago, sent me four (!!!) beautiful kokeshi dolls. Isn't that completely lovely?

Good morning, lovely tooting friends! ☀️ Have a lovely day! :blobcatheart:

Today is one of my office days, and as always, there is the exciting question of whether I'll get stuck in another traffic jam in the evening and get another fatigue crash as a result... Oh the joys of Long Covid!

[#]WhatchaReading I'm currently reading Golden Terrace by Cang Wu Bin Bai, a book, that I had already started some time ago, but had then put aside because long books and the stupid Long Covid thing don't go all that well together (at least in my case).

A couple of days ago, I picked it up again and I'm charmed all over again by this novel with its slow-burn m/m romance and the slowly unfolding plot. The translation is superb - far superior to most Chinese to English translations of popular lit.

[#]WordWeavers Does your SC value academics?

Aunt Burnell: ::stares::

Alfie: Eh...

Aunt Burnell: It is very important for a girl to get a good, well-rounded education.

Bertram: Especially the bit about getting the first blow in...

Aunt Burnell, giving him a basilisk glare: Don't be impertinent, Bertram.

Bertram: Ah... ::trying to disappear into his chair::

John, leaning over to whisper to Alfie: Is that the bit where we are told about the brigands in Sicily?

[#]WritersCoffeeClub #Writing Do you have a worked-out magical system/advanced tech?

I write #HistoricalRomance, so no magical system, but lots of research into the everyday life of the past. :blobcatbigfan:

At best, this involves a research trip (short or long) where I can try some Roman food. :blobcatbreadpeek: But digging through digital archives of Victorian periodicals or going through my own copies of Victorian periodicals is also pretty nice. :blobcatread:

[#]WordWeavers #Writing 25 When shopping, what does your MC look for? (prices, brands, ethical sourcing, quality)

Nell, very firmly: Price.

Will, reaching for her hand and giving it a squeeze: We all look at the prices, don't we?

John: Price and quality.

Alfie: Eh....

John: You don't shop?

Alfie: Not really. Mother sometimes sends me to the tailor or sends for the tailor, but... ::shrugs::

Will: You don't buy horses? The latest curricle?

Alfie: Eh... we have horses. Why should I buy more?

[#]PennedPossibilities What hobbies do you have outside of writing?

Reading (though I've been in a bit of a reading slump since the beginning of the pandemic, and Long Covid did nit exactly help...), watching Chinese costume dramas, playing the piano. You'll find the piece I'm currently working on below - it's the super cute "Rain Fairy" by contemporary Czech composer Jakub Metelka.

Occasionally, I also sketch, sew softies, or do embroidery.

[#]PennedPossibilities Are there any themes for stories that you’re excited to explore in the future?

Does the (historically correct) 🍆 jug count as a theme? Because Damianus' obsession with his 🍆 jug will be a lot of fun to write. 😁

But also, some second chance at love and pining and heartache for the intense pilus prior!

Family reunions. (Now that my own family has shrunk so much, memories of past family gatherings are precious and I want to imbue this story with that slight bittersweetness)

[#]PennedPossibilities What are your SC’s views on marriage?

Aunt Burnell: ::stares::

Alfie, hastily: We'd better... eh... Mr. Mitchell, what did you say are the topics you write about for About Town? Which is not at all a satirical periodical, so... ::clears his throat:: A really nice periodical it is.

John: Oh, indeed. ::nods::

[#]WritersCoffeeClub What prompted you to begin writing?

I started to write as soon as I could write, and before that, I drew my stories as picture books or dictated them to any of my grown-ups with enough patience.

Being a story-teller is a fundamental part of who I am.

[#]writersCoffeeClub What differences do you find in your process if you write both short and long-form?

My process is always similar, no matter the length of a story: First I imagine the story, then I sketch it out on paper (if it's a novel and I want to do a good deed for Future Sandy, I'll do a mind map as well), then I start writing it.

The only difference betw long & short is the point at which I deviate from writing the story in a linear fashion and start my patchwork storytelling instead

BERTRAM: What do you mean, not local? You, sir, are wearing the most outlandish clothes--

DAMIANUS: Now, that's a bit harsh.

BERTRAM: --as if you were about to attend a masked ball.

DAMIANUS: A what?

BERTRAM: A masked ball.

DAMIANUS, with interest: Is that something where you can get a nice jug of beer?

BERTRAM, glowering: No.

DAMIANUS: No beer? What a shame. Then you'll need to go alone, I'm afraid. ::pushes Bertram off stage:: Off you go. -- Now about those pictures...
