The #TrolleyProblem, but killing one saves X number from various levels of suffering and injury.
When is X big enough that 50% plus 1 of respondents say to let the one die (through inaction)?
When is X big enough that 50% plus 1 of respondents say it is okay to kill the one (through action)?
What if the one is indirectly responsible for the suffering and injury?

Busy week. #k12 state testing coming up next week, not looking forward to that. #AdultESOL classes going well. Redid the writing rubric from a vague table ("some errors", "mostly correct" type language) to a much more specific checklist type. #ChatGPT translated it to the languages my students use, and I learned a bit about using #XeLaTeX for non-western languages.

Short week for #k12 classes this week. Struggled to get my #HighSchool #EnglishLearners to free read today, but I expect that is mostly down to a 2-day week and it being Friday.
Prepping for #AdultESOL. Got a lot done during the 2 days off for weather, but now have to redo the course calendar that I just redid b/c we missed class on Tuesday. We missed Thursday also, for non-weather reasons, and so the redone calendar needs to be re-redone. Good chance to teach prefixes, at least.

If this was ever actually implemented, it would be very much fun to think of ways around it.
First thought: take a pic, ask #ChatGPT / #LLM the answer, put it in. Might be fast enough.
Second thought: scrape the site and research all the pics you can get your hands on before trying for real.

I published a rough proof-of-concept of my #AgeVerification idea at #NeoCities. Put the presidents or the game consoles (only two topics so far) in chronological order to prove your are old enough.
Of course, need some research to show how well it would work, but using accuracy and completion time should be somewhat indicative of age.
In full form, it would require many more topics and successful completion of more than one.

Some of my #AdultESOL students are not comfortable with #GoogleDrive or #GoogleDocs, so I made this short video for them. It covers opening Google Drive from Gmail, creating a document, and sharing the doc.

[#]k12 schools do not, and cannot, ask about #immigration visa status, but they can and do ask:
As an #ESOL / #ESL teacher, I need the info from 3 to help decide best ways to support the student.
But, all this info gets reported to the state. The govt doesn't need SSNs or visa status to target families.

Got a lot done on #AdultESOL prep (for both classes). Even recorded a video to help students get started with #GoogleDrive and #GoogleDocs. Created a couple of brainstorming worksheets, too.
I think I'm finding my footing with the #BESL8 class. It is an intro to writing class for students who are approaching college-ready English skills.
If I have some time tomorrow, I'll do some work on my #AgeVerification website idea. I'd like to get that on #NeoCities this coming week

@larryferlazzo
We've had some discussions about how to support our students and their families, but I wouldn't say we have a concrete plan yet.
To start, though, I'm printing these red cards for my schools tomorrow:

@larryferlazzo is right to highlight this article about LA schools preparing for immigration crackdowns, and to question if other districts are ready.

[#]K12 second semester and new #AdultESOL term off to a busy start. Teaching two levels of #AdultESL this term, one on weekend, one weekday evenings.
Unfortunately, state mandated end of term testing starts in February and basically continues until May.

Dang, I just remembered a weird / worrying dream that I had the other night. I think it would be best if it was a movie and not real life:
terrorist drone attack where several drones with explosives hit a building, each after the other, a bit further in the building. Also the terrorists flew a few straight into the lobby.
Moral of the story: drones will change a lot more than just traditional warfare. Also, I probably should not have had (something, not sure) before bed.

Only mildly serious idea for age verification - show pictures and / or names of people or significant images from various decades. Person needs to put them in chronological order as quickly as possible.
How many people under 20 can put the last 6 presidents in order just from their pictures in under 15 seconds and then again the same with some bands or actors or buildings or such?
Just a thought. Be interesting to do some research on that, if I had time for that sort of thing.

Just finished creating a (very rough) reading for #k12 #education #teacher #ProfessionalDevelopment - has some #Japanese words and some nonsense words mixed in an English academic-ish reading about the #Muromachi period.
Goal is for #teachers to understand what reading at school can be like for #EnglishLearners.
Participant-facing version is at:

Feedback always welcome. I understand the context, so can't adequately understand how difficult or not it is.

Finished one last small project this evening. Perhaps my last until at least spring break.
It is a small page that demonstrates some of the #math behind public-private key pairs. Intended for #HighSchool (-ish) #students interested in (or forced to learn about) #InfoTech #security.
Needs some updates, and probably some clarifications. Feedback / Corrections much appreciated.

Published my (simplified) Diffie-Hellman key exchange explanation and demonstration at #NeoCities.
It is aimed at #HighSchool students and shows that there is a bit more than just multiplying two large prime numbers involved in the key exchange.
If people who know more than me about this (oh, so many people!) would like to provide any corrective feedback, I'd much appreciate it.

We spent a couple of hours making #shogatsu dinner while watching #kohaku. Our biggest, bestest meal of the year.
In #Kanazawa, #Yoshiko, her mom, and her sister would spend much of the morning preparing a truly staggering amount of wonderful food. My job was to watch tv and drink beer with otoosan.
Now, we make #osechiryori (-inspired food) for just us, but still a family tradition worth keeping, wherever we are living.
We are very full.

The #NotoEarthquake was 1 year ago today. Many towns were hit, roads destroyed, and #Wajima burned. It hit during New Years, one of the most important holidays in Japan.
The wonderful people of the Noto are still recovering and rebuilding.
