Yesterday I got to help give feedback on student work.

Loved to see how well versed these (frontend dev) students were in WCAG and web accessibility, excited to see them come to the job market.

🔗One of the most important things to understand about accessibility is how people use the web.

The HMRC accessibility team built these interactive personas that show what completing tasks is like on inaccessible services https://personas-prototype.herokuapp.com/

Ah okay, this week, Matt Mullenweg also shut down WordPress'es sustainability team, that was going to implement the W3C's Web Sustainability Guidelines. 🙁 https://www.therepository.email/mullenweg-shuts-down-wordpress-sustainability-team-igniting-backlash

Noted in an audit today: providing a text alternative with the alt attribute only works on <img> tags, not on divs with the img role.

nice to see Portable Text Editor go stand alone! https://www.sanity.io/blog/a-block-content-editor-that-loves-you-back

A while ago, me and Kitty Giraudel worked on a bunch of accessibility features for PTE to make accessible content (like content with langs) and throw errors (like on lists that aren't lists), must expand when I find time https://github.com/hidde/porta11y

the fact that anyone can name Huddles at will in Slack makes it by far superior to Teams, where a hierarchical permissions philosophy infringes on the human need for banter

🔗 Component libraries can help with your accessibility goals, but using one doesn't mean “your team has somehow outsourced all its accessibility responsibilities”

Some great points in https://www.a11yquest.com/blog/2024-11-13-component-libraries

(I agree; they're a blessing and a curse https://talks.hiddedevries.nl/sHyKQE/built-in-accessibility-blessing-or-curse)

A few weeks ago I gave a very short talk at Mozilla 's performance.sync() meetup, with an intro to some of the things we're working on at Open UI Community Group, that can make your bundle size smaller hence making your performance better.

Because what's in the browser doesn't have to be in your bundle!

Slides + links are here (sorry a lot of them

Today, the W3C's Ethical Web Principles have become a W3C Statement.

They include sustainability, privacy, internationalisation and accessibility, among many other things.… all aspects of the web that are commonly under threat and need our full attention.

Thanks @hadleybeeman and @torgo for their great work on this
