@maartenballiauw Thanks for https://blog.maartenballiauw.be/post/2022/11/05/mastodon-own-donain-without-hosting-server.html

I extended it to not be a catch-all anymore via .htacccess using an apache server which serves my hugo site: https://www.katzien.de/en/posts/2025-01-02-add-webfinger-to-static-apache-site/

Current status: tired of figuring out why my #dell WD22TB4 #thunderbold 4 #dock will not show any usb devices but work for two monitors attached to it.

If someone knows something about the following: any comments welcome!

busn_res: can not insert [bus cf-9b] under [bus 6a-9b] (conflicts with (null) [bus 6a-9b])
devices behind bridge are unusable because [bus 9c-ce] cannot be assigned for them"
pciehp: Hotplug bridge without secondary bus, ignoring

Inadvertently, self-hosting advocates may undermine their own goal of better privacy and data ownership. By promoting open-source, self-hosted tools as the solution for those concerned about their privacy, they provide an escape valve for companies and regulators alike.

and

"The reality of privacy as a privilege"

[Currently, if you have money or skill, you can have privacy, by paying or selfhosting. The rest depend on laws to make it happen.]

TIL: there is third option to exclude a file from #git:

  1. in the repo via a .gitignore -> is committed, which some project might not want

  1. In the global gitignore -> makes it vanish in all repos, which I sometimes do not want

  1. In .git/info/exclude -> perfect middle ground: repo specific, but not committed

Use like this:

echo .venv >> .git/info/exclude

Idea: get all #linux kernel developer to list their hardware on one page (with an affiliate links to amazon/whatever, so there is a bit of incentive to list yourselves hardware there), so ppl can lookup hardware which actually will work thanks to these ppl probably sending in patches for buggy drivers...

This idea was brought to you by getting my monitors rearranged and a 'Unknown 24" display I have to deactivate by my new #Dell dock and lenovo #P14s after almost every wake-up from sleep...

TIL: system-creds encrypts and decrypts secrets with a host specific key (the TPM2 chip and/or a secret only accessible to root).
