Some folks I want to stay in contact with are on Mastodon servers that are defederating from this one because this one has chosen to federate with Threads.
To be clear, I don’t blame those other servers. I want nothing to do with Threads.
Is there another Mastodon instance which is reasonably well moderated, not huge, and doesn’t federate with Threads?
I’m getting tired of having to move my social media presence every couple of years, but I guess that’s life in the 21st Century.

Great writeup of the challenges faced by pilots of the firefighting aircraft in the ongoing L.A. area fires. I don’t want to think about how much worse it could have been without them. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-01-15/burning-hills-blinding-smoke-los-angeles-fire-pilots-aerial-fight

Uline’s owners donate huge sums to Reich-wing causes. The company abuses the US visa process to bring in Mexican workers, and pays them less than US wages. Don’t buy from Uline. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/dec/20/uline-mexican-workers-trump

I got email today from PG&E. It warned “Your bill is projected to be $###!” They estimated our electricity charges for this month would be 2-1/2 times what I paid for the same period last year. Gas usage estimate went up a few percent.
So I login (with some gratuitous difficulty) and look at current usage. It looks a lot like this month a year ago. We don’t use much to start with, so there’s not a lot to trim.
What’s different this year? I grab a PDF of the most recent bill, and compare it to a year ago. The bastards jacked up the electric delivery rate by 8 cents/kWh on Jan. 1! We have a local generation co-op, and their rates went up too, but not nearly to the same degree.
The state of California needs to take over the failed criminal enterprise that calls itself PG&E.

I’m guessing by the number and tone of earthquake toots here on sfba dot social that a lot of us live on the Peninsula.
I noticed it in Sunnyvale, mostly because my 2-monitor rig was shaking more than usual. Sounds like those of you closer to it got a solid jolt.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! LA Times has a story of an effort by 3 Native American tribes and researchers from several L.A. area universities to map the villages and trade routes of the pre-European natives. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-10-09/researchers-map-ancient-tribal-villages-of-los-angeles

On #TransgenderDayofRememberance, a shout out to Trans Lifeline https://translifeline.org/ and their support services for transpeople in North America. Their US hotline # is 877-565-8860; in Canada, 877-330-6366. They are a worthy organization to support on Giving Tuesday.

Places I've lived, in chronological-ish order:
Central NJ
NE Wisconsin
Orange County CA
San Fernando Valley
Boston
Mountain View
SF
Sunnyvale
And that's why I'm here to stay.
There's a lot I love about SF, but it's too cool (climatologically) for me. Sunnyvale and the South Bay don't have that city vibe. But I prefer the weather here. And it's safer for #cycling.
