Regardless of who's writing the code, somebody needs to figure out what to ask for, somebody needs to be looking at the bigger picture (seeing the arrows between the boxes), and somebody needs to know good output from bad output. And if it's bad, how to fix it - finally, refactoring gets it's day!

You probably know I'm very skeptical about whether LLMs will ever be able to do what we do. But if your boss believes they can, then a smart career move might be to diversify and become "T-shaped" - still a programmer, but also part product manager, part analyst, part architect, part tester etc.

It occurs to me devs who "just wanna write code"* - and don't want to get involved with product strategy, architecture, testing, UXD, ops etc - are putting themselves in direct competition with LLMs.

My side project for 2025 - which has just been reprioritised - is to ween myself off Big Tech, and off SaaS generally. Some solutions I'll replace, some I'll just live without.

Microsoft up first, and interestingly they'll be the easiest to replace. Everything they make I can find better (for free)

And as for Amazon and Netflix... Y'know, I think I'll be fine.
