As a #USU #Alumnus, I am again called on to denounce my university.
No, it's not about a coach saying raped students lie or a series of cases where USU failed to follow #TitleIX. This time it's about the whole of Cache Valley being told to attack a person living on campus because she dared to take an RA job.
I lived in Merrill Hall. I remember how accessible the units are. I remember repeatedly having to lock our front door because my roommates had just popped out for a minute and there was a guy going around trying the locks in the all women residential hall.
I am furious and embarrassed that USU, Utah legislators, and the weirdo ex-cop who's made a living on LGBT hate and antimasking in a pandemic.
Maybe focus on your actual threats to safety, USU. You know, your unending rapes and domestic/intimate partner violence on and off-campus. Not a young woman just trying to live her life and not harming anyone.

I've heard about #PeteHegseth's drinking and sexual harassment/abuse, but something I hadn't heard about until listening to #NotYourGrandmothersBookClub podcast was how he's been forced out of his two leadership positions for those reasons plus financial mismanagement.

Disappointing but not surprising. #SenatorJohnCurtis has a history of supporting sex harassers to the detriment of their coworkers, subordinates, and Curtis' constituents.
Don't remember what I'm referencing? It goes back to when Curtis was Mayor of Provo and he supported his buddy the sex harassing Police Chief.

Question for #Utah press and representatives about this upcoming legislative session:
Is House Speaker Mike Schultz seriously saying we need more election transparency when he did this?
https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2024/12/04/complaints-about-anti-trans-pacs/
If yes, then I agree. Not about election audits or pulling election administration from the Lieutenant Governor. I agree about auditing him and finding out what he's done to undermine our elections and who gave him the undisclosed $54,500 donation in 2024.

Listen to @onthemedia's debate between #BrookeGladstone and #HeritageFoundation's #MikeGonzalez, who wrote the section in #Project2025.
He argues "the market" will supply us with accurate, timely, and local programming and news and we don't need the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, whose funds mostly go to local TV and radio stations. If you want any honest information during crises like the LA fires (which are more and more likely with rampaging climate change), you need to be ready to fight for this funding in the new Trump budgets.
Stay ready and have your Congress people on speed dial.

Interesting that #AngelStudios is promoting and presumably making money off the story of a woman they'd never know if the end of her pregnancy at the start of her cancer diagnosis had been banned like #Utah and the #GOP are trying to enforce.
If #KimWhite had been forced to keep her pregnancy and stopped from aggressively treating her cancer in 2014, she would have died in that year. She wouldn't have become an influencer and documented her cancer treatment through to 2020.

From @sltrib:
https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2024/12/26/anti-trans-laws-kera-birkeland/
"In July, Birkeland was hired as director of policy for the Montana Grain Growers Association, although she never disclosed the hiring in her required conflict of interest disclosure. Her next disclosure would be due Jan. 10, the day her resignation takes effect. Montana’s legislative session opens Jan. 6, 2025."
Good riddance! I'd bet she only ran to be sure her seat stayed GOP, as she's had this job since July.
Watch out, #Montana. She's made her name on hate of trans people and school children and she's got her eyes on your House.

From the @sltrib:
https://www.sltrib.com/news/2024/12/23/slc-cracks-down-boarded-up/
"A new financial analysis shows it is costing the city nearly $15,551 per boarded-up structure per year to respond."
"Property owners will now pay from an initial $3,000 up to $9,000 per year to keep a residential building vacant and boarded, depending on how long it sits. Higher fees now apply for commercial buildings, with registration at between $6,000 in the first two years and a maximum of $14,000 annually when they are vacant six years or more."
I don't understand.
They're complaining about how much this costs in just money per year, but they're subsidizing the owners' choice to leave the property vacant by not passing on the full costs.
And they're trying their best to ignore the primary human need for shelter by keeping homeless people out of them.
Why not condemn or otherwise take the buildings back and use them as low/no-income housing? Oh, yeah. Because rich people should get returns on their investments. Forget the actual people trying to survive.

Heard two things today that made me think about one aspect of the murder of the insurance CEO that I haven't heard widely discussed.
From #ShrinkingTrump podcast hosted by two psychologists:
"You know what a clinician hears when there's like a 21 year old, who suddenly disappears for 5 months and is writing manifestos, and then shoots somebody? He's having a bipolar break."
From #QAAPodcast, which specializes in internet rabbit holes:
"So what are the chances here that Luigi once at least tried drinking his own urine or did some Wim Hof breathing or took an ice bath?"
"I do wonder because he definitely is, like, he got into psychedelics."
Yes, I know it's a classic dodge for people to avoid talking about gun control by saying the problem is mental illness and not guns, but I'll be interested to learn if there's anything to it in this case.

One ignoramus from a small town can determine who gets elected in and around the entire state because of money, bigotry, and power.

If you ever wondered why a sold red state's legislature is so focused on cracking Salt Lake County, this is why.
I live less than a block away from 3 of the 4 US House districts in #Utah, and this is my chosen representative on the Salt Lake County Council. Finally, when I and my neighbors are able to vote collectively, we choose someone with better, socially beneficial policies.
Why was this a "nail bitter"? I hate to say that dark money the local investigative reporters haven't yet been able to trace flooded the zone. Still, I'm so glad Natalie Pinkney won.
