Today was fairly packed (pic is from earlier in the week), but in the breaks between calls I was still able to fit in a talk and a book for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/3)

Last was "Gateway to Freedom" by Eric Foner. While this book has a focus on the history of slavery in New York City and the conflicting forces of abolition and escape against renditions of Black people (only some of whom were escaped slaves) to the South, it also touches on other areas of the country that were central to the abolition movement. Highly recommend

First was a great talk by @SRanchordas on how economic regulation has evolved over the decades at the Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute (ALTI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0X_MFh2aNo (2/5) #law #economics

Next was an interesting talk by Volker Stocker on the policy challenges of AI-driven ecosystems (FYI the sound is a bit scuffed) at ALTI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wYllZ_7hII (3/5) #law #AI

Next was "The Comanche Empire" by Pekka Hämäläinen. This book presents a comprehensive history of the sprawling military history of the Comanche. Contrasting with some of Hämäläinen's other books, it is extremely territorially focused and only has a few sections looking at the internal dynamics of how the Comanche lived

Today I listened to "Lakota America" by Pekka Hämäläinen, who traces the Lakota influence and story starting centuries earlier than most histories of North America. Most interesting to me were the pre-1800s chapters which trace their migrations and interactions with other First Nations, European powers, and eventually the United States. Highly recommend

Next was "The Oxford Handbook of IPOs," edited by Douglas Cumming and Sofia Johan. The first half of the book mostly covers various predictors of IPO outcomes from an economics perspective, but starting at chapter 14 the papers start focusing more on the legal framework of IPOs and international comparisons of different regulatory regimes. Highly recommend

Next was an interesting talk by David Atienza on accelerator-centric lower power AI architectures at The Athena AI Institute. This is NSF funded BTW, and given how essential this administration thinks AI is you'd think they wouldn't want to torpedo work like this by not paying researcher salaries, as they did today... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOl5xompTnQ (3/7) #AI
