I live near a regional park that contains the ruins of a sanitarium, encased in thick foliage. When it was operational, it was in the middle of nowhere and difficult to get to (civilization has since flourished). The placard near the ruin describes it as a place well-to-do families would send their problematic, difficult, often artistically-inclined members to hide them away out of sight.

It sounds like it was a marvelous place. I wish I could check myself into a place like that. Fuck I'm tired

Now that I only travel rarely, and by train when I can, I have even less patience for airport and airline fuckery. Seriously why did we let it get this bad

Anybody know if there's a way to view old conversations here? I'm scrolling through ancient history and even though I can see that a post had replies, or was a reply, none of the posts ever load when I click into the thread. Same in Tusky as on the mastodon web app.

You know, this is on me for still using Dropbox, but I cannot believe how bad the "photos" page on their web app still is. No thumbnail caching; impossible to scroll to a specific time without it jumping everywhere. Shockingly bad experience for people who have multiple years of photos stored, which you'd think are exactly the users they'd want to appease.

At least they've got AI now, I guess!

Flying somewhere today, for the first time in a long time. Horrified to see new facial recognition stations at the front of the TSA checkpoints. Please remember that, at least for now, you can decline to allow this tech to be used on you (same as the backscatter scanners).

Next up on my quest to learn more #antifascist #accordion tunes: The Battle Hymn of the Republic / John Brown's Body. A simple one, but catchy AF.

I have been desperately trying to regain my ability to get through a book since it left me sometime mid-pandemic.

Julia (recommended by @pluralistic ) may have fixed me:

It's not just a retelling of 1984, it IS 1984, but updated to focus on aspects that people living today are beginning to understand first-hand. It adds such richness, depth, and heart to the original, in a way that elevates the entire universe, that it should be required reading alongside Orwell.

As if YouTube ads weren't insufferable enough, now they're all narrated by AI-generated voices. How is this effective?

The Board had appointed Girard

To safeguard the chard in the shuffleboard yard,

But after some time, this task had so bored him,

He cordoned the gourds at Gordon's Gourd Garden.

It has been wild to see my home town on national news over the past few days. The Asheville area is far from the coast and generally protected from major weather events by the mountains.

It also has a history of overreacting to the threat of snow/ice/whatever, so I didn't think anything of Helene until I started getting texts from friends asking about my family—who were suddenly unreachable (they're safe).

If climate consequences are already coming for WNC, the hour is later than you think.

Thinking about The Diamond Age today.

On my post-work mental health walk, I listened to the latest Mystery AI Hype Theater. They were discussing a new AI company that wants to replace elder care with LLMs. Because of course LLMs are a great way to provide companionship to the elderly.

In the book, the masses have to be content with ai-powered interactive fiction, while the wealthy can afford actors to power their own.

I love Stephenson, but that man has spoken so much Torment Nexus into being
