"We should preserve the past", said absolutely no-one who lived in the poverty-stricken shit-hole that was "the past".

In between coughs and sneezes (for lo, I am Ill) I have been drinking copious tea and listening to #podcasts. During the bit on #BBCInsideScience where they talked about a paper on contagious urination amongst #chimpanzees, I desperately needed a piss. I think that means I did a successful #replication, which is why I have written up this important scientific result for publication, here. #NobelPrize

[#]StormEowyn dropped a LEAF on my car! Someone call the emergency services, I'm freaking out here! Also, congratulations to #Eowyn for having an excellent name. Can we expect to see more names in #Tolkien-ish?

Local buses are buggered, so no going to the pub tonight. Instead, I have a night in, and I have been a bad person and not restocked my home bar with Boring Brown Bitter. Order placed with #Felinfoel to fix that, and I shall now settle down with Yellow German Beer. First, #Flensburger pils.

I think I owe @edwinb an apology. I was deeply sceptical about the utility of his funky types in #Idris a few years ago, but having now listened to the interview he did with the #CoRecursive podcast, and also after exposure to #Rust's magnificent error messages, I'm now convinced. https://corecursive.com/006-type-driven-development-and-idris-with-edwin-brady/

Does anyone know of a #MacOS equivalent of #FreeBSD's #glabel? I want to name a bunch of devices with names like eg 'red-disk', 'blue-disk' etc so that when they are attached in some random order in the future they have stable names /dev/red-disk etc instead of being /dev/disk3 one day and /dev/disk5 the next. I do not want to use device serial numbers.

@mwl I also have #SunMicrosystems ZFS On Disk Specification, and Iβm not sure they both agree. I expect I just need to read more carefully.

For some light Christmas reading I have @mwlβs FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS, and am being constantly reminded about how infinitely superior #FreeBSDβs driver architecture is compared to #Linux.

All my #GithubActions tests for handling weird length floats having started blowing chunks. Vote now, for whether I should figure out what's going on, or whether I should watch the last episode of #Foundation while stuffing my face with chocolate!

Today in Computer Abuse: built #openzfs on a laptop which, while not quite old enough to get a round in, is at least old enough to want to get a round in. Disappointed that I canβt buy openzfs stickers to go on the lid.

The biggest problem with #Rust is that the opposite of #mut shouldn't be #let, it should be #cat.

I have a bunch of #zfs snapshots hourly.0, hourly.1 ... hourly.23. Every hour the oldest gets destroyed, the remainder get renamed, and a new hourly.0 is created. I want to create a duplicate of one of them and keep it for a while with a stable name, while still being able to destroy the original hourly.whatever when its time comes, so a read-only clone won't work. Help?

Yes, the bug is indeed in #MacPorts. Well, in the p5.34-devel-checklib port at any rate.
If #perl #XS is broken for you in Mac Ports then https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=157638 may be helpful.

Had a nice productive afternoon playing with #zfs on #freebsd, I think I'm ready to write my next backup tool, which will use rsync-over-ssh to pull data from other machines, and zfs snapshots to store daily/weekly/monthly/etc versions. Bit disappointing that FreeBSD 14.2's zfs list
doesn't support the -j
flag to report in #JSON instead human-readable, I suppose that didn't get into #openZFS until a bit too late for the 14.2 release.

Woo-hoo! My new 12 year old laptop can run #Virtualbox! I'm sure some of you are all like "well duh", but ... woo-hoo anyway! This means that when I'm at my parents' place for Christmas I can take @mwl and @allanjude's #FreeBSD / #ZFS book on my kindle, and FreeBSD on the laptop and avoid all human interaction!

Back in 2004 (yes, 2004, that's not a typo) I asked if support for the lchown()
system call could be added to POSIX.pm, which is part of the #perl 5 core, so that I could use it in #rsnapshot and users wouldn't have to install the third-party Lchown.pm off the #CPAN. "Yes", people said, and it was.
20 years later I have finally created a PR to use the feature I asked for.
Do I win a prize for being the slowest programmer ever?
