“Well, you know that,” said Ford, “I rescued you from the Earth.”
“And what’s happened to the Earth?”
“Ah. It’s been demolished.”
“Has it,” said Arthur levelly.
“Yes. It just boiled away into space.”
“Look,” said Arthur, “I’m a bit upsest about that.”
Ford frowned to himself and seemed to roll the thought around his mind.
“Yes, I can understand that,” he said at last.
“Understand that!” shouted Arthur. “Understand that!”
Ford sprang up.
“Keep looking at the book!” he hissed urgently.
“What?”
“Don’t Panic.”
“I’m not panicking!”
“Yes, you are.”
“All right, so I’m panicking, what else is there to do?”
“You just come along with me and have a good time. The Galaxy’s a fun place.”

I have written many books of which I haven't said a word here, among them "The Cyberiad," the "Fables for Robots" (in "Mortal Engines"), and "The Star Diaries," which on the generic map of literature are to be found in the provinces of the humorous---of satire, irony, and wit---with a touch of Swift and of dry, mischievous Voltairean misanthropy. As is well known, the great humorists were people who had been driven to despair and anger by the conduct of mankind. In this respect, I am one of those people.

Also, I badly want Apollopunk to exist. It would be like steampunk, but with a retrofuturist reference point of the late 60s.

Looking back on the year, I added quite a bit to my (right brain) site in 2024 with projects ranging from building an Altair 8800 replica from scratch and running early versions of Altair (Micro-Soft) BASIC to hauling a free matrix line printer home and seriously scaling up textmode prints. Along the way, I've enjoyed holding an ear to this wild, distributed, non-commercial online world that is #mastodon. Happy New Year to all!
