The truth will set you free; but always by showing that you were never imprisoned.

If you have some good news year's resolution that you're planning to start with tomorrow, read Kierkegaard:
Imagine that one morning he said to himself [...], βI solemnly vow that I will nevermore have anything to do with gambling, never β tonight will be the last timeβ β ah, my friend, he's lost! [... If he] said to himself, βWell, now, you may gamble every blessed day all the rest of your life β but tonight you are going to leave it alone,β and he did β ah, my friend, he is saved for sure!

#gratis

"God is all-knowing." Human knowledge abstracts from concrete reality, requires justification, and presupposes non-identity between the knowing and the known. Whatever divine knowledge might be, it can't be that. To be all-knowing is not to have more of what a finite knower has, but to be an entity of an entirely different type, one of which we can have no grasp at all.
Anyone who claims to know the mind or will of God, does not even have the faintest idea of God.

Idea for next year: #book bingo. These are 49 books I want to read. I won't be reading all of them. But whenever I read seven in a row, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, I'll have book bingo! Not sure how to reward myself for that yet, but I'll think of something. (Maybe I'll be allowed to buy a new book?)
By the way, it's not a square, it's a torus! So I'll also have book bingo if I read, say, Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, Rechter Tie, Lieke Marsman, Fair Play, Kant, Arabian Nights & Homo Ludens.

That Christmas pudding I made ten days ago, in my cooking adventure of the year, was reheated for two hours today, taken from its form (blessedly intact!) and eaten.
Was it worth it? Yes, it was! It was glorious!

"When Suffering knocks at your door and you say there is no seat left for him, he tells you not to worry because he has brought his own stool."

The grogginess from the sedation mostly worn off, Mark noticed his wife beside him at the hospital bed. "It feels good to be alive, baby!"
She smiled. "The doctors say that everything went as well as possible. Nothing to worry about anymore."
"I'm sure glad I didn't opt to have my consciousness uploaded into a computer! Better roll the dice and risk the operation."
"Right you are, deary," his wife said as she bent over to him, kissing his lips while her eleven fingers tousled his hair.

I've been highly critical of LLMs here and elsewhere, but to counterbalance that a bit: I wanted to know where in Aristotle's De Caelo I could find his argument that space is finite, and ChatGPT was far more helpful than the search engines.
(Of course I can and did immediately check the truth of its answer, because I wanted to read the passage. I would not rely on it for an unchecked reference!)
(Edited to add: it then gave me fake references to Seneca and Cicero, which wasted my time.)

For the past few years, almost all of my #ttrpg playing has been as a GM (or, sometimes, with a GMless one-shot). But now we've started a new @lumpley Apocalypse World campaign, with one of the other players taking over my GM role. And it's liberating! It's so good!
This character is taking over my headspace in a way that never happened when I was GMing. She is aspects of me that I'm normally not in touch with. This is the shit.

Idealism in #metaphysics often sounds crazy to people.
But what would be really crazy is if the world were completely independent of the structures of human thought, and nevertheless contained facts, which stand in logical and evidential relations to each other. Lucky beings, we, that our world comes ready-made with the exact normative structure that we need for thought to be possible!
