i was listening to John Dowland's song "Can She Excuse My Wrongs" ( https://youtu.be/LB9USv8VYvA?si=qXTL1Gd1Todvf2Vq -- listen to that recorder shred!) and it occurred to me that Prof. Kahan might have been inspired by the lyrics for titling his 1983 "Mathematics written in sand" lecture: https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~wkahan/MathSand.pdf
