For anyone who may not be aware. I volunteer with the Ham Radio Village (https://hamvillage.org/ @HamRadioVillage )
Our mission is to deliver high-quality and innovate amateur radio related educational content, hands-on experiences, and license testing sessions online and in-person through events. We believe that the more people know about amateur radio, the more safe, secure, functional, and innovative our wireless products, services, and experiments will be.
Our team of dedicated volunteers is responsible for generating all new research, giving talks and demonstrations at events, building and testing experiments, as well as offering support to the general ham radio community.
One of the bigger events we support is #defcon . Each year we bring in people to teach ham radio concepts and administer free licensing exams. We share the love of #hamradio with the #hacker and #STEM communities.
Of course, this takes money. If you're willing and capable, please head to our website and donate. We're a 501(c)3 non profit. All of our funding comes from grants and donations.
Please, help us help the community.

Stupidly stressful even at work. Of course my body decides an ocular migraine is just what I need right now.

Any of my #hamradio peeps participated as an operator in the JOTA event coming up on the weekend of 18-October?
I've got a local scout asking me to help them participate, but they don't have a ton of details.
I'm assuming that there's a point system similar to POTA or SOTA, or something scheduled in advance like GOTA.
I don't want to just go to a park, deploy an HF rig and say, "here's how we do it, call CQ and hope for the best" unless that's literally the plan. (Same for VHF/UHF stuff)

My fellow #hamradio peeps: please don't be the jerks who are berating unlicensed folks asking for help with severe weather events. In the US, part97 is pretty clear that if it's an emergency, all bets are off. Same with part47, part 95, etc.
Help others, and after they're safe, put out an offering to help them learn the hobby.
Tl;Dr : don't be jerks.

For folks who may be hit by #milton . Please take notes from those who went thru #helene
Ensure you've got sufficient drinking and washing water. You can fill up a bath-tub for water that can be used for general purposes. Also if you have a hot water heater, that's a reserve
Additionally, assume that cell phone, internet, power, and pretty much all utility services can be impacted.
Conserve any fuel you may have.

I suppose I never did a proper #introduction post. Hi, I'm Reboot Kid. I got into Information Security after spending several years in general IT support, both at the desktop and network layer. It was in the "I-Love-You" and "SQL-Slammer" days when I first started working on vulnerability assessments, patching, and remediation. It's been a climb up the hill since then, and I try #mentor others along the path into the industry as well. I've been a #defcon attendee since DC17.
Other than that, I'm big into outdoorsy stuff like #camping ,#fishing , #offroading , and #hiking .
I'm also a #ham or #amateurradio fan, and enjoy spending time on digital modes or working with #winlink to see just how effective I can make email over radio. I'm also a #volunteerexaminer with #arrl and #glaarg
