So, they're not offering un-DRMed ePub as their default, and they require you to use their app or a browser to read the books. :( But they do say that some publishers (such as Tor) mandate un-DRMed ePub, and so those books will be available through them in that format to read on the reader of your choice. So you could certainly check if the book you want is available un-DRMed there, but if you're either anti-DRM or just want to use the books on your eBook reader, they're not yet a viable choice.

This is AMAZING news. I hope that they are using un-DRMed ePub. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/books/indie-bookshop-e-books.html

I'm like 99% sure I'm getting dumped soon and I have asked for clarification of where we stand and have been told that she's not sure. It's a very weird and deeply uncomfortable limbo to inhabit, especially because we still talk online and have in-person events to attend together.

KEYBOARD NERDS! I have come up with the ultimate keyboard design!
Eight keys and one switch, which the user can order as a lit rocker switch or one of those safety-covered "enable" toggles.
In default mode, each "keypress" is a chord of the first seven keys which encode the ASCII value of the character you wish to type, with the 8th key being a dedicated "ENTER" key.
In "Professional" mode, enabled via the hardware switch, one to four intermediary "keypresses" define each byte of the UTF-8 character. Of course, the vast majority of characters one types will require only one chorded keypress, but more can be entered as needed to type any UTF-8 encodable character. Since the first byte also encodes how many bytes are required, there's no ambiguity.

Does anyone know for sure if foreign citizens visiting the U.S. whose gender on their travel ID doesn't match their "sex assigned at conception" are at risk in any way, or is it just U.S. citizens? I need to figure out if I have to change my "Visit the U.S. at all," policy in addition to just "Visit specific U.S. states," policies.

Well, they rejected my change of name form because I put a hyphen in my first name, which also exists on all of my ID but doesn't exist on my birth certificate. So they asked me to remove the hyphen. That's the ENTIRE change they needed. And like, to be clear, it's in the name I'm changing, which will be wholly irrelevant once the form is processed. However, since they had me change the form, they also need me to fill out and sign the affidavit that it's correct again, and get that witnessed by a Commissioner of Oaths again, and re-fill-out the payment form again because they securely destroy that each application cycle. So I've got first and last bits done. The witnessing by a Commissioner of Oaths requires going in to the government offices in person. Fortunately, there was an appointment for 9:55am tomorrow, and I grabbed it. Then I file and wait 6-10 weeks... AGAIN.
Fortunately, I'm patient and trained in jumping through hoops.

TFW you're doing a crossword over your lunch break and you realize that there are only six blanks for "Like skim milk", so they're likely looking for "NONFAT", not "JOYLESS".

I asked Google on the drive to work this morning, "Hey Google, tell me a joke," and it responded with, "Here's one of my favourites to start your morning right: What does a magician and a hockey player have in common? {sound of a drum riff and people laughing}" Like, that was it. Sarah and I agreed that it was way funnier than whatever the actual joke was supposed to be.

You know, I often say that I was immensely lucky in that when I came out, I only lost one friend. However, it was the first person I came out to, and they were an experimental artist, which -- art just always seems like the purview of the left. It really took me by surprise.
Tonight, I was going through my collection and read up on the right wing, fascist, and racist associations of some of the bands that that particular friend got me into. I wouldn't say I was ever fully on board, but they bought me some media as gifts from time to time and I liked a couple of songs in a very naive way.
I made the choice to purge their music from our media server. I have to decide what to do with the physical media.
I had gotten the idea that that friend had become very... distracted by certain misogynist male thinkers, which never seemed great. But I think maybe there was more under the surface that at the time I didn't have the context to examine carefully. It's disappointing and kind of sad, and I wish I'd been a better influence when we were young.

Having a lot of feelings tonight. I took this photo to send to one of my partners along with the question, "Are you sure this is what you want?" Her response was lovely and supportive. I'm very lucky. But yeah.

When Like yelled, "SHUT DOWN ALL THE GARBAGE MASHERS ON THE DETENTION LEVEL!", I wonder what the downstream effects of that were. Like, I mean, they all got blown up days later, sure, but how long did it take for them to notice, and how backed up did their trash processing get in the meantime? Were they merely flattening waste for transport, or did this also ruin compost deliveries for the food system or raw materials for manufacturing? Were their supply chains resilient enough to be unaffected?

Lovely, but also affirming gifts. The bracelet is from my mother-in-law, and the barrette is from my mother-out-law (the mother of the nesting partner I'm not legally married to). :)
I don't know if I quite feel pretty at the moment, since I'm tidying and covered in dust, but I feel cared for.

I just called for an update on my name change, and they said that there was a letter sent to me on Dec. 19th which is probably held up by the postal strike. They need me to change page 1, page 16, and the credit card authorization because of some minor discrepancies (they didn't detail them all, but the one on page one is apparently that I put the hyphen in my name, which appears on almost all my ID, but because it doesn't appear on my birth certificate, they need me to take it out). So whenever I get it, I need to complete it with the changes noted and resubmit.
