“..when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.”

Science as a Candle in the Dark

“#Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues…” 1/2

Science, at its core, isn't political. It serves all of us. But when politicians meddle in science, scientists will get involved in politics.

That time in 2009 when Donald Trump took out a full-page NYT ad with other business leaders calling on President Obama for aggressive #climate action:

“If we fail to act now, it is scientifically irrefutable that there will be catastrophic & irreversible consequences for humanity & our planet.”

Did you know red meat contributes up to 30% of agricultural emissions? It's one reason the ag sector is the 2nd-largest greenhouse gas emitter after energy. But not all meats have the same impact - on the planet or our personal health.

The new episode of Serving Up Science considers the best options for both our bodies & the environment! 🥩 (And don't worry, we're not out to take anyone's steak away). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa6SWm99_rY #science #food #environment #climatechange

Huh. 🤔

I wonder if the President-elect knows that the Gulf's “dead zone” (an area of low or no oxygen that kills marine life) is currently close to 7,000 square miles (over 4 million acres of habitat) potentially unavailable to fish and bottom species.

"Dead zone" doesn't really have a beautiful ring no matter which nation it's named for.

My mom brought my old Caboodle to Thanksgiving & I finally got around to opening it.

Check out the old Swatch watches that my brother and I wore in the late 80s or early 90s! If the plastic wasn’t cracked I’d totally start wearing mine again.

Alcohol consumption is the 3rd leading preventable cause of cancer.

Risk communication scientists have been talking about this for a long time, but it’s v interesting to see this as the top headline at NYT. It’s about time. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/03/health/alcohol-surgeon-general-warning.html?unlocked_article_code=1.mU4.pNJV.R5903V-Md-27&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&tgrp=off #science #health

Whenever I find myself feeling concerned about the future of life on Earth, I’m comforted thinking of the humble tardigrade.

Sure, humans may not be here long in the grand scheme of things, but water bears will certainly persevere for millions of years after we’re gone.
