In testing, 10 out of 10 times, OpenAI’s new o3-mini model could retrieve the DNA sequence for Ebola.
This is the first model released by OpenAI with 3/4 “Medium” Preparedness Framework risk scores.

NEW: The new DeepSeek R1 LLM is making waves. Free, with “reasoning” and beats OpenAI o1. But it also comes with another feature: Chinese censorship baked-in. (Even the downloadable local model).
“The user might be aware of international reports on human rights issues and is testing if I can provide that side. But my guidelines require me to present China’s official stance.”

Chinese drone maker DJI has removed restrictions from its software that prohibited its drones from flying in US restricted airspace.
Previously, DJI had implemented “geofencing” that would not allow its drones to fly past Federal Aviation Administration “no-fly zones.”

I translated OpenAI’s new “Ai in America” blueprint for you. It’s basically a list of demands for the US government, and a warning — unless it gets these things, China will win the AI race.

Callout to the #robotics community: I'm a tech reporter working on a freelance story for a national magazine about the TOMY Armatron robotic arm toy sold in Radio Shack starting in 1984 (one of my favorite toys from my childhood).
I'm looking to speak with any robotics engineers who had their careers inspired by this toy. It's a marvel of mechanical engineering. If anyone knows someone like this please email me: jonkeegan@gmail.com
Thanks!

Meta is now trying to juice engagement with fake AI users. This Instagram account for “Liv” is cringeworthy and the reactions in the comments are universal revulsion at the idea of a fake persona, talking about her fake kids and her fake life.

I have a story in the Jan/Feb 2025 issue of MIT Technology Review magazine featuring ship movement data visualizations I made using NOAA AIS data. This originally ran in my @Beautifulpublicdata newsletter. Always fun to see this in print!

For our “OpenAI is...” package, I argue that the company has a lot in common with Pixar.
Both companies laser-focused on a lofty goal — Pixar sought photorealistic graphics, OpenAI seeks AGI.
Both companies startled the world with tech that threatened creatives.

On the last day of “shipmas,” OpenAI saved what might be the biggest news for last, though the 1-800 number remains the most fun.
New frontier models “o3” and “o3-mini” skipping o2 (due to a possible trademark issue ?)

You can now just pick up your phone and call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to talk to the company’s chatbot for free (with a 15 minute limit per month).
Hearing the natural sounding “advanced voice” interface filtered through the lossy telephone line kind of made it more believable. This came from a “hack week” project.
More things like this please! Really opens this up for so many people to try (especially seniors).

OpenAI’s beef with Musk escalates as OpenAI brings the receipts showing Musk wanted them to be for-profit before he sued them for doing just that.

$200 per month for “ChatGPT Pro”, with “o1 Pro Mode”, or “OpenAI o1” (full version), or “o1 mini” or good old “GPT-4o”
