Just checking out Bandcamp - https://daily.bandcamp.com/best-of-2024/the-best-electronic-music-of-2024. Looks nice and I'm reading comments that it's good for artists.

Nice start to 2025 - finally bullied a toy reinforcement learning model I've been using to try stuff out into different behaviours for different parameters.

It only appears in the speed to converge, in the early learning stage. I was expecting to get a more qualitative difference where the model can just fail within certain parameter ranges but no luck there yet.

Finished the very addictive but mercifully finite Spiritfarer, and tried out this UFO 50 thing, with 50 old-fashioned - very old-fashioned - games. It's extremely well-reviewed and I don't really get it yet. It's clever but they're really old-fashioned and clunky. Maybe the trick is to get past that and see the genius below? Overcome modern instant gratification?

Was chatting about AI today and couldn't refind a post I'd made a while ago with some "proper" positive applications that don't seem to be in the public consciousness so much - put together a page to collate sources here: https://www.tegladwin.com/files/misc/AI_applications.php.

Good general point - when normal people fight back and fight for their own interests in some collective fashion, how does that get negatively framed?

More on the Letby case - innocent or not I don't know, but the apparent attitude to evidence and "there could be no other possible explanation" were so concerning that I'm really glad they're looking deeper into the situation.

"Our investigation reveals a hospital unit operating beyond its skills and capacity – one that was understaffed and suffering from low morale, lacking the expertise to deal with babies with serious needs, [...]"

Like, maybe take someone originally created as an anti-hero and see if you can make them great, heroic, symbols of integrity, love and strength. Take a real challenge.

And if that's so much harder to do, is there a kind of entropy there, a direction of decay.

Maybe - Walter White uses his chemical genius to support his community in his last years and fight back against drug dealers. He invents non-addictive meth!

Rings of Power critique: I've the same sense of something of value being lost and replaced by something actually less interesting at this point in time. It comes across as a distaste for anything that isn't made smaller or lower in a way, so the Elves come across as as easily corrupted as Tolkien's Men were supposed to be.

That said, I'm still watching it. It's still a form of creativity even if I'd prefer to see some reversals of the heroism-killing.
