Where is the balance between giving users lots of customization options, vs simply doing the research to build it right, once? And why do most products get it wrong?

[#]UX hiring is trending away from open-minded teams equipped to gather and integrate new knowledge, and towards executing a single commodity-grade vision issued like a royal proclamation from the User Proxy.

In trying to avoid making new mistakes, these teams end up doomed to repeat their old ones, forever.

The second issue of Product Picnic is out, coming on the back of a week of #AI products being rolled back across the industry after unanimous outcry by users...and the Washington Post announcing an AI strategy that is light on "strategy."

Plus, competing visions on the state of #UserResearch, and a critical change to Amazon's "Working Backwards" methodology that makes you scratch your head.

As always, the Picnic is 100% free and 100% human-written. Give it a read. #ux

New year, new sletter. I'm going to be taking some of my my posting about UX design and product management directly to the inbox.

Always free, always written entirely by humans. The focus will be on drawing threads across content rather than just summarizing other people's work into "digestible" bullet points.

Thinking about taking things a bit less seriously - there are no seats at the table here, because there are no tables.

Everything is easy if you don't care about the quality. Unfortunately there's a guy like that on every team, and it can be a challenge to try and beat those terrible ideas to the punch.

[#]UX Designers can either compromise their own effectiveness in a futile race to keep up, or reject the bullshit framing that the Fastest Gun in the West tries to peddle and double down on tools that shape the mental models of their stakeholders.

Magic is not fiction. We invoke words of power on a daily basis. "Scale" is one of those incantations. "Velocity" is another.

No process or framework is immune to a simple invocation of Velocity.

But of course, magic requires belief. Without the magical thinking of "shipping things faster will somehow inherently produce more value" the spell of Velocity is powerless.

"significant negative correlation between frequent #AI tool usage and critical thinking abilities"

Interesting contrast between tools for distributed cognition VS offloading your critical thinking. The value of, for example, Miro is not text in rectangles - it's making sense of data through the work of arranging it into richer constellations of meaning. Generating that output on your behalf would actually make it worse at doing its job.
