I just saw it pointed out that "X" is 88 decimal in ASCII. Suddenly everything falls into place...

Whatever service provides the weather info for my laptop says it's -9.3°F (-22.9°C) outside. Which is, amazingly, optimistic. It's actually -16.1°F (-26.7°C).
In other news, I have no plans to step outside unless absolutely necessary. I've been outside in -26.2°F (-32.3°C) and don't care to repeat it.

I've already shifted a number of services I use to European alternatives and/or self hosted. It's a shame that I feel this is necessary.

Sincere question. What are the best English-language non-US news sources? I prefer coverage of global issues as well as US ones.
I currently have the BBC and DW as my non-US apps, along with the AP and Reuters as US-based.
I don't mind paying a reasonable amount if necessary, but a mobile app is a must.

Can't hurt to say so here given the significant performance gains. I'm open to work! If your company is hiring, let me know. I strongly prefer remote (and am in the US) and have availability after a couple weeks notice, so as to wrap up contract work.

Squeezed another 10% performance gain out of both Date::to_calendar_date
and Date::month
.
It's worth mentioning that Date::month
is branchless and done in under 30 assembly instructions. That's being calculated from my internal representation, not even the idealized, parameterized function!

Anyone have a bingo sheet for the miscellaneous bullshit Americans should be expecting between noon and midnight today? I may as well have some level of fun while watching everything we know burn to the ground.

Worked on optimizations with great results; some methods in the time crate are twice as fast!
The first two algorithms hadn't been published when I originally wrote the code, The last two I conjured myself using a similar technique.
It took a fair amount of fiddling to get it to optimize just right, as seemingly inconsequential changes had nontrivial impact on speed.

No standalone announcement, but #RustConf 2025 will be taking place in Seattle per the Foundation's annual report. I was told this in private a few months ago, so I have no reason to believe it is not accurate.

It turns out "smart home" was originally coined in the mid 1980s for a very impressive technology. It wasn't theoretical — dozens of companies spent millions of dollars working together and had a working demonstration. This would be absolutely incredible now let alone 40 years ago.
Imagine if this actually happened at the scale predicted.

There's some more technical items such as prohibiting interest on excess reserves, which would destroy the US banking industry as we know it given that the mandatory reserve level is currently zero. I've focused on some of the crazier items, which is difficult to do with so much insanity present.

For those not used to walking on ice: lean forward a bit. You want your center of gravity to be directly over the foot that is on the ground. It will likely feel like you're walking like a penguin.
It's not perfect, but at a minimum it means you will fall forwards and not backwards, which is safer as your head won't impact the ground.
Happy to answer any questions people have about winter weather. I've lived in an area with weather like this my whole life.
Stay safe!
