I feel like I must be misunderstanding something... Is 5G device authentication really still some janky symmetric key agreement protocol based on AES-128?

This sounds like a recipe for "database compromised, now all sim cards cloneable". I'm sure there are specialized HSMs but you can't really make the entire server the HSM

Sometime since January 24 the state department reverted passport forms to the 2020 versions, which do not have X markers.

This was done rather sloppily, the forms are marked as expiring in 2023.

If I get my passport card with an M marker I think I'll try filing a DS-5504 (free correction) application with one of my birth certificate copies and see if they'll change it

(I think for NYC to Helsinki you could do NYC to Hamburg, take a taxi to Travelmünde, then take a ferry from there to Helsinki. I have no idea what the Finnlines baggage limit for passengers without a car is though)

if you're not staying in the country you arrive in then I have no idea how customs would work. Cunard has some routes from NYC to France, the Netherlands, and Germany, and there are probably some repositioning routes to the Mediterranean, but e.g. if you want to get to Finland I'm pretty sure you'd have to land in the EU customs union at some point. I can't find anything about VAT/tariff relief if you're going through another EU country first.

Also NL really wants you to use a moving company, you aren't allowed to file the forms yourself

... slowly realizing that the cheapest shipping for moving from new york to europe might be "take a transatlantic cruise"

if you're just going us to uk you can get a cabin for 2 people for 1700USD total, with the baggage limit of "as many 23kg/50lb bags as can fit in your cabin"

how often do western tv shows write the theme song in 1st person from the protagonist's perspective? it's a thing i've seen in a few anime series but i can't think of any us shows like that (the closest might be "a series of unfortunate events" which had a different song for each episode, from the narrator's perspective)

welp, FOIAed the state department about their policies on determing sex on documents. I'm excited to get a "actually we don't have to give you that" response in like a year.

what is it with Japanese and Chinese media and using normal German words when they need the name for something?

I guess too many people know English and German sounds foreign or something. It's just funny watching some anime then they mention a town named "Äußerst" (german adverb for "extremely").

i love how every time someone tries to explain 3GPP standards to beginners it turns into "SWu is the protocol used to connect from the UE to the ePDG over non-3GPP networks. During handshake the ePDG sends the address of the P-CSCF to the UE to allow it to use IMS services"
