Starting to see more spammy posts with a boatload of unrelated tech hashtags, mostly seeming to come from mastodon.social.
I like Mastodon because people aren't trying to juice their YouTube views most of the time!

Are you or your organization holding a #database with information that could get people harmed? Gender identity? Pronouns? Citizenship/immigration status? Sexual orientation? Damn near anything else personally identifiable?
Think seriously about deleting that data right now.

TIL I can do
[#] nix repl

to inspect the attributes of my current #nix #flake - since 90% of the mistakes I make are in composing attributes.

Started building a new app in #Django, fully templated and server-side rendered (with #HTMX to come for interactivity), and...
I'm just enjoying it. It's easy to build incrementally when my brain wants to work on it. The frontend is painless. It's fun.

Put the salary in the posting. In state after state, it’s the law. And it’s the right thing to do.

Built a thing! Route your #linux #xorg bars and widgets to monitors based on criteria like "largest" or "rightmost".
https://github.com/davidmreed/monitor-affinity
I use it for #polybar but it ought to work on any command that takes a monitor name as a parameter or env var.

[#]Nix and #Bazel are both totalizing systems. They require big ecosystems and large user investment because they expect the entire system to work "their way". (I use and like them both).
Are there build systems exploring more interoperability with off-the-shelf tools like npm, pip, cargo, and friends? Building interfaces to define reproducible steps, cache units, all that good stuff?

I'm on vacation for a month (!! Thank you to my team and manager) and I really want to make things, but in, like, a burnout-friendly kind of way.
Not sure what that looks like yet.

Dear privileged folks who had an edgy post deleted or got banned for being a jerk:
I promise you don't really want unmoderated communities.
Your embarrassment will fade.
Just don't be a jerk.
Unmoderated communities are uniformly awful.
Signed, a guy who's done a lot of moderation of spaces that are super tame by internet standards

I use #nixvim and would like to set up completion to run only on request (I hate popups while I'm typing). I haven't found a workable config for that using #cmp - anyone have pointers?

I want the word "#minimalist" to disappear from software discourse. All it does is elevate the preferences and trade-offs of the speaker to a global principle.
Just state what qualities you're optimizing for!

[#]SkeletonCrew is like night and day with other Star Wars TV projects. The writing is crisp, consistent, and charming. The cast is great, including all the kids. And the world-building manages to avoid the Star Wars continuity festival, while still being playful with references and creating something new.

TIL: if you do ADD --chown
in a Dockerfile to add a tarball as a layer, the --chown
does not apply to the tarball's content, which makes it pretty useless.

Upgraded PayTransparency.work to #svelte5. I like runes so far. On my small codebase, they're simpler and more immediately understandable.
