Today I am reminded of a quote from John Stuart Mill: “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends than that good men should look on and do nothing.” Not inclusive -- 1800s and all -- but you get the point.

If you dislike where we are as passionately as I do, you, too, must be prepared to stand up to bad behavior. Let us stand together and fight the good fight.

I have found a person who put how I feel as a cynical, cranky #sysadmin and why. If you're a fan of #CoryDoctorow, you will enjoy this. It's long, like start-and-finish a cup of coffee long, but it's so good.

I've never felt so seen as a sysadmin.

I don't think anyone in Ohio should be asking someone to 'stay frosty' today. With a negative air temp and wind chill, it's kind of not a choice at this point. 😏

Today #Mensago reached a milestone: a real, actual end-to-end-encrypted email-like message sent from one test user to another with no PGP involved.

Read more about it at the website, and please boost for reach. If you're as sick and tired as I am of spam and companies being hacked, I need your help getting the word out. I need help. Read more at the link.

Today is one day where I have to remind myself to take the high road.

I want to spend the next 4 years reminding most of my friends and family on FB -- who largely voted for Racist Felon -- that 'they voted for this', but that only antagonizes people instead of helping them see the problem for what it is. sigh

I have reached a conclusion I never expected: #LinuxMint is on its way to being a better #Windows than Windows is: all the productivity and none of the nonsense.

Today I finished the shelving in my laundry room! I'm sure to many it's no big deal, but this was literal hours of work. I feel so proud of myself.

TIL that you could get your Windows password leaked to an attacker with a maliciously crafted theme file. Great job, #Microsoft !

In 2023 I went to a psychologist to have an official diagnosis of inattentive #ADHD.

If I don't have it, then why, oh why, do 90% of the memes on r/adhdmeme resonate because I live them?

All my life I've felt like the exception to just about every rule out there, alone in a crowd, and it hurt because I was really lonely.

Seeing what the world has become, I couldn't be happier about it, and "be the change you want to see" has become my mantra: more kindness, more empathy, and actual community.

Tonight I just finished installing a ClosetMaid shelf in our laundry room after a week of stops and starts, and I'm confident it's done properly.

[#]Home repair, maintenance, and improvement do not come naturally to me at all and I don't have much experience, so this is a huge #win.

Feeling so proud of myself.

Lately I've been spending a lot of time working on the code and tests for Mensago's Contact Request feature. I keep patching and still keep finding stuff that needs adjustment and it just dawned on me why: key exchange can be complicated and even more so when #E2EE exchange of contact information.

Outside of verifying peoples' keycards, I think this is probably the most important code on the platform.

And it's this close to being done!

Welp, here's the end of my end-of-year vacation. It was much more drama-filled than I would have liked, but it was a good rest.

Still don't want to go back to work, though. 😏

Oh boy, if I didn't have enough drama in my life. Checked an old email account I don't normally use and received 2 copies of an information exposure extortion email a month apart. And a screenshot of my desktop a year and a half ago on a PC I no longer use and completely wiped in the last year.

I'm pretty sure I know how it happened. I took a few calculated risks and got burned. I know better, but apparently some lessons have to be learned the hard way. sigh

Today I learned that sometimes you need to make your own debugging tools because even a great debugger isn't sufficient sometimes.

I've also learned that print debugging, despite jokes, is sometimes needed (and good!) because it's a form of logging. Any good sysadmin knows that sometimes you live and die by the contents of the logs.

If you look at Mat 10:34 in context, Jesus is talking about bringing division to the earth. He said this because the Jews thought Messiah was going to show up and be some military leader that would overthrow the Romans.

While Jesus didn't directly speak about peace except in these instances, if you look elsewhere you find appropriate references, like 2 Thes 3:16 and Col 3:15, and throughout the Bible you also find God referred to as being a God of peace. (2/2)
