A company called Edgio have gone bankrupt and the azureedge.net CDN will be going away on 15th January 2025.
It's used for .NET and Azure things. if you're using it, Microsoft has a replacement CDN:

Pillow 11.1.0 is out!
One of the cool updates is we're using zlib-ng 2.2.2 instead of zlib 1.2.8/1.3.1, which is more than twice as fast at saving PNGs at higher compression levels.
In more detail, zlib-ng has the same file sizes for compression level 0 and bigger files for level 1, but if you care about size, any higher level gives more or less the same file size, and zlib-ng is much faster.

π€ποΈ An exciting thing last year, one of my #NaNoGenMo works was published in "Output: an Anthology of Computer-Generated Text 1953-2023"!
https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262549813/output/
Dear Santa is an epistemological novel sourced from tweets containing "I want". (Not in the book, one output is from a certain election result day in Nov 2016, capturing a grimly familiar mood: https://github.com/NaNoGenMo/2016/issues/138)
It's a fascinating book with a wide range of pre-LLM works by many brilliant folk, I'm proud to share the same pages.

This is a fascinating #38C3 talk about how generative AIs coined the word "arafed" when describing images, how real people use it to make AI images look "better", other real people try hard to scrub the word, and which model is responsible for coining it and words such as araffe, arafficial, araful, arafly, arafective.

Video here, the "arafed" bit starts at 37m 50s:

@jessesheidlower The missing text:
"... mission from The Boss , to slow up man's hectic rushing around . The result is al- together happy . " Lust " is a powerful serio - comic drama of bittersweet adolescent love and full- blown adult passion - with a hint of the destruction unrestrained appetite may bring an innocent bystander . " Envy , " based on a story by Colette , is a deliciously witty tale of a young wife . consumed with envy of her painter - hus- band's aristocratic cat ..."

@jessesheidlower Regarding the 'Further Antedating of "Sci-Fi"' on ADS-L, I've excavated most of the page in question.
The top six snippets are contiguous, as are the last two.
I couldn't get the image to join the cite to the date, but found the text in between (see next toot).
But we get the full text for the "scifi-drama" review (and a couple of "scifiads") for the Magnetic Monster (US release Feb 18, 1953). Other films Split Second (May 2, 1953) and Seven Deadly Sins (May 13, 1953).

I also made a ridiculous 4,000-page dictionary of the not-a-words for #NaNoGenMo complete with definitions sourced from @wordnik and with the original citations :)

I was going to share this @grammargirl podcast anyway because of the brilliant @emckean and the wonderful @wordnik but:
"ERIN: We had a couple of people who set up some little automated scripts that looked at Twitter, and anytime someone said "that's not a word" on Twitter, it added it to a list, and these lists got huge. And the lists were really entertaining, but technically they were difficult for us to maintain and load."
erm, sorry! π
