I swore I wouldn't buy a car modern enough to run a whole operating system. Now I'm tempted to reconsider

Let’s imagine a person who fell in a coma in 1908 and woke up in 1928. That person, before falling unconscious would have probably never seen a car. They would have learned that two brothers managed to fly for a few feet but they would have probably never seen a plane either. Their house and their city’s streets would have been lit at night by gas, if at all. If they'd been a cinemaphile they would have seen the first feature length film, but little more than that. Radio was still just used for communication with ships and the first audio broadcast was a two year old feat. The telephone existed, but the first switchboards had just been installed and if you lived somewhere without a network you had to buy two telephones and install the line between them yourself.

And then they wake up in 1928. The automobile market is almost saturated, and the Model T has sold 15 million units alone. Most middle class American families had a car. Plane travel was for the rich but the first transatlantic flight was already old news and airships flew wealthy passengers across the pond regularly. The sheer noise of all those machines would have been staggering. Then the night would come and the cities would not be dark anymore. A flip of a switch could light up your house in an instant. Neon lights adorned theaters, night clubs, town squares and other attractions and looked like something straight out of the future. In fact this 100 year old technology still looks like something from the future. Going to the movies was a regular night out for every American, and the movie industry has yet to surpass the proliferation of the 1920’s. Listening to radio programs was now a regular kind of entertainment and telephones connected almost everyone. (can’t find specific citation for this but it can be quite safely inferred)

We usually think that a lot of things have changed during our lifetimes and it’s a general belief that due to exponential technology we have experienced the most staggering changes ever to be experienced in history. And that is almost universally true and the impact of the internet, the web and pocket computing cannot be understated, but in terms of how impressive the changes were, I think the early 20th century wins hands down.

Of course our friend would be in for a nasty surprise a year later but that’s another story.

I've been listening to #hopwag (history of philosophy podcast) and one thing that I was amazed to realize was that english-speaking scholars pronounce ancient greek differently than how modern greek speaking people do*. To the point of being almost unintelligible.

Is it a case of everybody pronouncing it how they like or are there two schools about how it is pronounced?

They should make a foldable phone with the screen on the outside only and a camera like the N93.

It should allow for cheaper construction (only one screen ) and a very good camera (because of available depth). It would also only need one camera because this depth allows for optical zoom.

When I was developing applications for iOS and iOS 7 came out, if you targeted iOS7 you had to lose iOS 4 compatibility (IIRC). So I uploaded a copy of the old app as "classic".

It got rejected as duplicate and was never published. So even if the developer wants to support old devices, they can't.

Also, it used to be that you could do the things you could do on a computer when it was new, for as long as it was not broken. You maybe couldn't run new things on it but at least I can still play my C64 games on the C64, and I can probably find lots more on the web.

On a 10yo iPad I can't do shit. Even the app store interface is deliberately hostile. You have to pay for the app before it tells you it's incompatible with your device. For free ones you have to try, there's no prior indication of compatibility.

Planned obsolescence was always a thing, but also was moore's law, so it wasn't so infuriating.

Now you have a perfectly modern machine that is remotely disabled because, fuck you consumer.

Random advice about old, locked "general purpose" computing devices, like an iPad. Long before it's obsolete, decide what kind of appliance you would like it to be when it finally becomes unsupported.

Install the applications you need, test them out offline, make sure they work as you intend. Disable automatic updates for these and leave them be. Install a vnc viewer if available.

When the time comes, delete everything else and you have your appliance.

Brought to you by the frustration of finding a working cbz reader on an old, unsupported ipad, to use it as an offline reader.

I have started to have a repugnant reaction to most genai images, coming from somewhere deep inside me.

It is disturbingly uncanny. No prior technology made that bad impression on me when it started coming out, I was cheering on them all.

I was always using my phone without a case, because I wanted to feel the device as the designer intended.

This last one was clearly intended to be used with the case. It came bundled with one, and is nigh unusable without it (you can't hold it without touching the screen unintentionally). Not to mention very fragile.
