Sometimes you are the windshield. Sometimes you are the bug.

This is definitely a bug day/week.

Ready to reset.

What do we call that awkward moment when you walk out of your therapist’s office and see the next person waiting? I always want to say “What are you in for?” I never do of course. It’s just weird.

Just had to remove the hand tools, peg board, and plywood from one wall of the barn shed. Why would I do this at 7:45 in the evening on December 23rd? Because we got new barn kittens of course and one chose to get stuck between the studs up behind the plywood. Damn good thing he is cute.

I would make much more progress on the project if I would quit buying new domain names. “Oh that’s an even better name.” Also I’m going to need funding just to support the domain name habit.

It has not been a good week in farm decisions and outcomes. Can we just go back to last week at Monktoberfest and try again?

I recently had a great conversation with Bryan and Gautham , reflecting on why enterprises struggle with Devops and Agile. The industry is now abuzz with Platform Engineering. Will it succeed? I believe it has a better shot at success. Listen here to hear why: open.spotify.com/episode/19ZX...

As a hearing aid wearer, the Apple AirPod announcement (https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/9/24236881/apple-airpods-pro-second-gen-hearing-aid-protection-features-update) is exciting. I won't be using them or at least not exclusively. I love the fact consumer electronics companies are focusing here. The hearing aid industry would benefit from a focus on user design. Optics matter though. I can't sit in a customer business meeting with AirPods. At least not yet. The discrete aspect of hearing aids today is the current killer feature.

Today it’s frustration over the thunderstorms last night and building today. First ones in 5 years in Seattle!

I haven’t figured out all the hay bailing yet so that means there is a lot of hay still on the ground. That’s now wet.

Plus I needed to spend yesterday helping a friend. It was a privilege and I had a good time but no hay was bailed.

Farm thread:

I get to post the really good and fun about farming. It’s basically a hobby, but we would like it to bring in income to defer the costs. Maybe even slightly profitable in a few years!

But it doesn’t always go well. A hawk taking out two hens recently is a good example. We are still learning. I grew up with citrus and cattle but we are doing either of those here.

And today I was able to start to cut our first batch of hay out of that pasture. We won’t make much off of that. First cut late in the year for the first time in years. Probably won’t be great quality but will feed someone’s goats and cows over the winter.

A little lime and a little manure fertilizer and some we will have something next year.

Buying and rebooting a farm has been a dream and a joy. It’s also a privilege in several dimensions.

My luck and day job has given us the financial ability. Every day is something else that breaks or is needed or whatever. Also incredibly lucky to not have to depend on it to put food on the table.

It’s also an honor to care for it and reboot it. Slowly starting to see material signs of progress. We have eggs to eat, share, and our first chick hatched here on the farm.
