Well folks: I think the party may be over when it comes to quick-turn circuit board fun. “For avoidance of doubt, duty-free de minimis treatment under 19 U.S.C. 1321 shall not be available… on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern time on February 4, 2025.” https://www.reuters.com/world/trumps-canada-mexico-china-tariffs-suspend-loophole-behind-fentanyl-shipments-2025-02-02/

Package 1/2 I’ve been waiting for has arrived, and we did it! The ten percent temper tantrum tariff begins Saturday, and we beat the buzzer by three days. Not even that dramatic, really. Future Sensor Watch runs will cost more to manufacture in the USA as a result of this nonsense. But for now, all our raw materials have been delivered, and duty paid.

…also, this means I probably owe y’all a backer update soon.

this reminds me of a comment from a friend who used to work in the same building as Goldman Sachs, and would post things he overheard in the elevator:

“How’s it going?”

“You know. Market goes up. Market goes down. We make money.”

wait so you’re telling me the NFC championship game is sponsored by TurboTax… and the AFC championship game is also sponsored by TurboTax… which means that no matter who loses, TurboTax wins? Again: this feels very on the nose.

social media as implemented by the big tech companies is a fairly solipsistic enterprise, but even for them this is a bit on the nose. “Imagine yourself reflecting on life in an endless maze of mirrors where you're the main focus.” https://www.404media.co/instagram-begins-randomly-showing-users-ai-generated-images-of-themselves/

Mercifully we sprinted to get as much as we could out of China last year. There’s one big part left — the boards we need to send to @MakeAugusta for assembly here in the good old US of A — and this is going to add $275 to their cost. If it had applied to everything, the extra 10% would have made Sensor Watch Pro cost an extra $1200. And every $1 added to my cost adds $2.50 to the price you pay, to keep my American small business and my American distribution partner going. It’s all pretty great 🫠

Knock on wood, but I think Sensor Watch Pro has been given a reprieve. (We manufacture in the USA but our supply chain, like many others, depends on China). https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/20/trump-tariffs-day-one-00199280

I have decided, after ~infinity minor annoyances, that I cannot fucking stand technology anymore, and I say this as a professional technologist whose job is to make with the tech all day every day at a place with “tech” in its name.

Today: there used to be a simple menu option to take an ALL CAPS thing and make it Title Case; now in some MacOS apps it's vanished, in favor of AI things that I will never use. WHY THE FUCK IS THIS THE FUTURE WE INHABIT? Did literally ANYBODY fucking ask for this?!

Apparently I saw fit to wake up in the middle of the night, write this movie pitch in my notes app and go right back to sleep:

“Home Alone, but Kevin realizes his parents are shitty; partners with Harry and Marv to rob them (and half the houses in the neighborhood) in exchange for a cut of the take.”

I did not plan it this way, but after dumping another batch of Sensor Watch Motion tests I have exactly 12 days of data, leading up to Christmas. Still need to algorithm the shit out of this, but visually it's making sense: orange is orientation change count; blue is stationary minutes; red is temperature above baseline and green is temp below. Sleep: stationary and warmer (wrist under blanket). Bike ride? Motion up; temperature down. See if you can spot my afternoon spent cooking for a potluck!
