A curious sequence of events that are not worth explaining led to me going to this today: https://www.darwin.cam.ac.uk/lectures/entry/bits-with-soul/
It was excellent, but you knew that already because it was SPJ. I gather it will be available on the internets soon enough.

I'm selling some tat on eBay and being reminded why it's a right pain to do that. If someone asks me what's the lowest I'll accept, then gets stroppy (and calls me "dude") when I reject when they make an insultingly low offer, they're likely to be a right pain after they buy too, aren't they?
Thank goodness for the block feature. Every system needs a block feature.
Also, if anything about me says "Dude" then something has gone badly wrong.

Last boost: Definitely some kind of hero.
I have stuck googly eyes to light switches in my home. Because of course I have. I stuck some to my Roomba but they fell off and got hoovered (roombaed?) up. Alas.

I think I normally stick to my CS nerdery on this particular corner of the internet, but in case anyone is interested, another thing I contributed to this summer (Filker Song Swap Volume 2) in which we all made an almighty racket for a good cause, has just been released for those who donate: https://tiltify.com/@metricula/filker-song-swap-vol-2
I gather it'll be freely available on Bandcamp next week.

This has been a fun meeting overall but a highlight has to have been grabbing a handy ukulele (you all have handy ukuleles, right?) and singing a Green Day song with @jer_gib. Apologies to anyone who was sitting too close.

I used to find working group talks terrifying, because whatever I'd prepared I never knew where the audience would take me. I'm giving one tomorrow morning. This time I'm quite looking forward to finding out where the audience will take me.
It's about the new Scheme based future-Idris core. Or is it? I suppose we'll see when it happens...

Apparently my brain has decided "At a conference, therefore it's an hour ahead of the time at home".
I'm in Edinburgh this week. I live in Fife. Where do I report this bug? I'm fairly sure there is no time zone change on the Forth Bridge.

I just dropped in to the birdsite to delete my account, and, since I was there, posted "Just dropped in to delete my account. Why are you still here?"
Obviously someone I don't know had to reply, because that's what happens there isn't it... they said it was still the best social network, so I learned everything I needed to about whoever it was.
Anyway. It's gone now. Bye!

Turing Completeness is overrated anyway. Pacman Completeness is where it's at.

I once implemented Whitespace in Idris because I was the right sort of bored. People are happy to believe Whitespace is Turing Complete but Idris? No, couldn't possibly be, I mean it's dependently typed isn't it? (Of course it is. Stop it.)

I often read on the Internet - and I realise that I should know by now that it's not a good place to read things - that Idris isn't Turing Complete and can't be because it's dependently typed. I think I can guess where this idea comes from, but, in case of any doubt, it's Turing Complete. Of course it's Turing Complete. For goodness sake...

For various Reasons I've started wondering how much of my time LLMs have wasted vs how much they've saved. I haven't been keeping score, but I'm certain that it is something to nil.
(Please dont @ me, because I don't want the "something" to get bigger)

Well I never. Unification with evaluation of open terms via a Scheme runtime actually seems to work. I'm as surprised as you are.
Of course I've said this out loud now so it's bound to all fall apart immediately. But I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

On the latter, it was my first visit to Berlin, and Cezar had apologised because he was busy that day, so I was filling in the afternoon with an open top bus tour, just to cover all the main sites as quickly and in as little depth as possible. And I'd just hopped on when my phone rang with Cezar saying, "so it turns out I have a spare ticket for an outdoor Beethoven concert in a couple of hours. Want to come?"
It was definitely better than an open top bus tour.
