Neat-looking cross-platform SOTA/POTA logging program by N9FZ, HunterLog: https://github.com/cwhelchel/hunterlog

From the readme:

- supports: FLRIG, RIGCTLD, and N3FJP's CAT API (more possible)

Thanks to @ve3qbz for walking me through BPQ AXUDP and forwarding today! #BPQ #packetRadio #FARPN

On a lighter note...

Did some packet radio today. Stopped myself trying to send a 14 kB meme to @ve3qbz after several minutes at 300 baud. But still had fun!

Slightly disappointed as always to find out that the programming tutorial (in this case, rust) doesn't teach me how to program, it just teaches me how syntax differs from something else (C).

(I'm only half serious, "one of these days" I'll learn how to program right.)

I'm thinking about migrating from Wordpress to a static site. Are there any with decent fediverse/activitypub abilities?

I guess Writefreely could work. I really like just dropping images in, but I guess any static site is going to make me go back to manual image uploads and code inclusion.

Why in the world am I thinking about how to design a manual 100w antenna tuner?

POTA was a nice way to zone out today. 30 CW contacts in about 50 minutes, 5w with 20m hamstick on the roof of the vehicle.

Some days CW is a challenge, today it mostly worked. Probably my longest session to date. #hamRadio

Ooh, maybe I can just build a transformer.

My attitc fan dipole doesn't show low SWR anymore. I threw up a trapped dipole I built from a kit, but that was never tuned in free space, so it's no surprise that it doesn't work in the attic either.

I have an outdoor antenna, this is just for secondary use.

It's a filter on the IF, right? Is there a "natural" width in a given circuit without a filter?

What search terms do I need to understand what defines how open the front end is in a receive circuit? #hamRadio

So @ve3qbz offhandedly mentioned #WoAD again, an Android Winlink app which has some #packetRadio stuff included. Once I updated versions, it actually gave me a terminal. Big fun today going across the continent on UHF, HF, and AXUDP! Used a #Mobilinkd hooked up to a Yaesu FT-60.

What do the circles on the #meshtastic app mean? They aren't there all the time.

Fun list of #hamRadio mailing lists, at least some of them are still active and go back at least 20 years: https://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo

There's a SSB contest station sitting at 7.045? Isn't this a CW portion?

So your station would sit on the air at a known frequency and listen for traffic. Could be voice, could be CW, could be digital (although with digital you might have more capabilities, so why use this). Station could beacon to prove propagation. A person without other methods could use a portable rig to send an "I'm OK" message to the receiver. The receiver would be automated on the backend to queue up traffic for a human to process--and that human would not need to be a licensed amateur. 2/2

I think I posted an idea about what would essentially be a voicemail box for ham radio. Not a repeater, just a place to drop traffic. This is how we treat some digital modes (packet BBS), but could be simplified. (For a complex version see https://mastodon.radio/@W1CDN/111749840174214707).

It might be useful for getting health and welfare info out of areas when bandwidth is a problem. 1/2

The tension in ham radio circles between "chain of command and structure are paramount" and "I know how to help, so I will" is...interesting.

"First, do no harm" seems like it would cover this, but we should all know that personal risk assessment by the lay person (that includes me) is not great.

Stay safe, neighbors.
