[G]eology is a visionary science. Take rocks, for example. To map them takes a lot of work, plus imagination. The #Oakland Hills look like rocks should be plentiful, but when you go up there you see rocks exposed along the roadside & isolated boulders everywhere else. Creating a map of the bedrock by filling the gaps between those scattered bits and streaks is like looking at the scraps of a nearly erased drawing & somehow perceiving the original picture.
