I'd recommend that anybody who's not already familiar with the word "autogolpe" (from Spanish) look it up, because we're going to want to have that term handy for discussion of what's going on in the coming months and years.

I think somehow that choosing @GossiTheDog

as one of your initial test cases for a 419 spam could be seen as a poor choice.

But regardless of what's coming to that poor sucker, I reported him anyway.

At this point we all need to put some heavy pressure on mastodon.social.

Spam is ramping up and almost 100% of what I see is coming from there. If I personally block it, however, I'll lose a number of people I am following and really value.

This really is the Usenet spam story all over again.

ALSO, for all the FOSS people - the whole movie was made and animated in Blender!

That's amazing, and my jaw dropped when I read that, because this is great animation. It has a lot of the feel of a Studio Ghibli film, while keeping its own unique look to it.

Really impressive.

We spent most of today cleaning and babyproofing our house in preparation for upcoming visits, including daughter and son-in-law's first visit bringing our grandchild, now one year old.

We came up with a clever new way to protect our kitchen drawers and cupboards against being tugged open by a toddler, who we're told is tall, walking, and quite strong for his age. I came up with an idea involving a standard hook and eye, with the hook part on a bit of nylon cord.

It works surprisingly well.

Here's one nice thing to set against today's dumptruck full of horrible:

Sunday we went to see the movie 'Flow' while it was still in a theater. I'm so glad we did.

It was lovely, beautiful and mysterious, and with animals that behave like animals (not Disneyfied nonsense.)

Cat acts very much like a real cat, and communicates with very real cat noises, using them as a real cat would.

The setting is mysterious and there is no voiceover explanation. Nothing. Just appreciate it.

8 years ago, after Trump was first elected, along with donating to other groups that I thought would work against his policies, I donated to the ADL.

I'm sure not going to make that mistake again.

@lluad

Kudos to you for seeing the writing on the wall and moving while most people were still going "Why are you exaggerating this so much? America will be fine."

Listening today to The Jazz Butcher's Bloody Nonsense.

Thinking how his song 'Real Men' called out all the "Men are from Mars" and similar bullshit masculinity in 1984, a solid 40 years ago.

My trans and NB friends, my non-white and immigrant friends, I love you all, and I will do whatever I can to protect you.

I pledge to you that I will not comply.

As I move towards retirement this year if my personal life goes as planned, there should be more time and more energy to devote beyond my daily life, once a mentally taxing job is subtracted from it.

I'm hopeful to think out ways I can go beyond simple noncompliance; probably even this is saying too much, but I need to say it.

Who was the guy back in the '90s who had written a similar piece of software as an email antispam measure, for webcrawlers by spammers searching for email addresses?

(Yes, Best Beloved, there was once a time so innocent that ordinary people guilelessly posted their personal email addresses on their personal web pages.)

There are so many hard, serious, and concrete external problems right now, it almost doesn't seem right to talk about anybody's personal problems and feelings.

But those problems continue to be just as real to the people experiencing them.

And I believe one of the biggest and most fundamental roots of personal unhappiness is that so very many people do not feel they are deserving of love.

So for everyone reading me:

You are worthy of love.

If someone tells you you are, please accept it.

It's a good recipe - and vegan - and works even though I substitute freely for ingredients I can't find here, mostly:

I've found saikyo miso as "Kyoto white miso" at Asian groceries or health food stores.

A pretty picture (not mine) that goes with the recipe:

I made the special New Year's soup ozoni again today for New Year's, one of the Japanese customs I took up several years ago.

Throughout most of my childhood, after moving back from Japan, we ate pan-fried mochi for good luck every New Year's Day and I picked that up again as an adult.

Maybe 5 or 6 years ago I decided to take it to a higher level by making the traditional ozoni soup with mochi pieces.

Recipe from here:

Y'know, I was wondering how the media and FBI could be so quickly and confidently describing the New Orleans attack as 'terrorism'. Other instances of crazies - usually right-wing crazies - driving trucks into parades, pride marches, or pro-Black rights rallies have instead been met with extreme caution and warnings not to assume it's terrorism.

Then I saw the suspect has an Islamic sounding name.

I'm so damn tired of this shit.

@JessTheUnstill

We picked the Thieves’ Cant scenario and ended up inventing a special language used by a group of gender-queer swindlers and conmen in 19th century NYC, who identified themselves as The Genteel College, and telling how it changed through the rise and fall of their group.

It included creating characters and roles for each of us, and then acting out dialog between the characters in different situations relating to the terms we were inventing.

Really a good experience.
