On what would be his 87th birthday, I want the fediverse to know my father-in-law, who we lost last month: Rev. Philip Kunz. A UCC minister, wonderful father, & social justice warrior from way back. As an Asst. Pastor in Shaker Heights, OH, he was a part of the group of pastors that brought MLK to speak there on July 28, 1965, which split the congregations of the churches involved in much turmoil. He treated me as a son for the 34 years I knew him, & I miss him every day.

Going through my late father in law's papers & came across a truly cool thing: program from a 1965 event he helped organize as an assistant pastor in Shaker Heights OH, where MLK spoke from the church porch, autographed to him by Dr. King.

So my neighbors here in Silver Spring MD (inside the beltway even) decided tonight would be the night for a backyard bonfire. Not ok in an inner-ring suburb, especially with the drought no outdoor fire ban in place. Then they decided to throw 5 or so 5-gallon plastic paint buckets on the fire, followed by several plastic trash bags. Fire dept showed up, yay! and put it out right fast.

Went to see Wicked. First time in a theater since before the pandemic shutdown....tickets are $17.50 now? And no less than 15 minutes of commercials before the trailers, & 1 ad in the trailers. And they wonder why everyone stays home and streams

Watching the Ellipse Speech last night, this is what struck me & my wife the most:

"And those who came before us – the patriots at Normandy and Selma. Seneca Falls and Stonewall. On farmlands and factory floors. They did not struggle, sacrifice, and lay down their lives, only to see us cede our fundamental freedoms, only to see us submit to the will of another petty tyrant."
