Please tell me I'm misunderstanding something and these clowns don't seriously force the users of their "privacy-focused" app to use a smartphone.

My go-to choice would be C# / dotnet, but I'd like to know what other popular alternatives there are.

Don't say rust. I know.

So uh. If I wanted to write a software on Linux (Mint) that takes a couple text files, does some regex fuckery on them, and outputs a new file, what language would I write this in?

That is not a script language? No Python (hate it), no JavaScript (was never meant to leave the browser)?

Something that compiles to an executable that just works, without interpreter or runtime (no Java either, if I can help it).

I'd say C++, but C++ is a pain in the ass and doesn't have built-in regex functionality (did I mention that's another requirement?).

Fedi software that automatically flags all new instances with < 20 and > 2000 users for manual review.

Fedi software that keeps track of how often which unblocked instances boost content from blocked instances to you so moderators can see which instances are gateways to nasty corners of the 'verse.

Fedi software that automatically flags lots of similar posts for manual review.

Messenger apps should have alt text features. Tbh.

I have a completely selfish reason, too (or maybe a way to sell it to developers who don't care about accessibility):

Being able to search pictures.

No week passes without me looking for a picture I sent someone ages ago and not finding it because I remember some text in the image but can't search for it.

For the love of god, when you report another user, describe the issue!

Yes, even if you've attached posts.

Yes, even if you think it's obvious.

And if you haven't reported any specific posts, and haven't described the issue, how do you expect us to do anything about it?

Also, keep in mind: if we suspend an account, their posts will be deleted after 30 days. Thanks to some genius at Mastodon gGmbH, they are not retained with the ticket for review purposes, not even links to the original posts. So if we later want to review why a certain account was suspended, that's a lot harder when the reporting user didn't send a description of the problem.

So for fuck's sake, use that text field! Please!

Trade offer:

We receive: description of your report

You receive: moderation

Hey fedi,

can anyone here recommend a USB device for reading/writing to audio cassettes?

From what I've seen, 99% of the ones you find are cheap solutions for digitising cassettes, usually with terrible quality, mandatory compression, and shipped with bloatware.

I want just what is on the casette, no misguided "optimisation" (if any remastering needs to be done, I'll do it myself), and I want to write audio to it as well. So basically, it has to be a tape drive that acts as an audio interface to the computer that I can take input from (record from casette) and send output to (record to casette).

Not an immediate need, more like a long-term want-have, so I can't put an exact figure as the budget, but suffice it to say, I'm poor as fuck.

No, a full sized vintage tape deck is not an option.

It doesn't have to be software controlled start stop. I'm not sure where everyone infers this from.

What I need is something that's as small as possible, since I simply don't have room for more, and will reproduce the cassette's audio or any input I feed it as faithfully as possible.

Hooking something small up to my audio interface would be perfectly possible, but most tape decks I've seen are pretty large, like half a tower PC or several 19" rack units, which is larger than I can accomodate. Built-in A/D interface would be preferable, but isn't a must.

Okay, bash scripting problem.

I have a script that takes a file as parameter ($1) and prepends and appends text to it. I do this by redirecting a printf call into a temporary file, appending the contents of $1 via cat $1 >> my_temp_file, and then appending a second printf call, then overwriting the original file via cat my_temp_file > $1 and deleting the temporary file.

However, if the name of the file, the $1 parameter, contains spaces, it throws an error.

Say the file is called "My first file.txt". I run the script via ./my_cool_script.sh My\ first\ file.txt or ./my_cool_script.sh "My first file.txt", I get the following error:

cat: first: no such file or directory

cat: file.txt: no such file or directory

./my_cool_script.sh: line 4: $1: ambiguous redirect

Notably, it's only the second cat call, when I overwrite the original file, that seems to throw this error.

Anyone know what's wrong?

If you, as a government, want to have the monopoly on legal violence, you have to live with the fact people will not be violated willingly. Putting aside all considerations of the legitimacy or not of that monopoly, if you reserve all the power for yourself, you have to accept people will not help you apply that power against them.

That's the deal.
