Yes you read the title right. This high school student built his own laptop and it’s not some janky thing it’s a viable usable laptop.

Jan 2025 Reading Recap

I know I’m always looking for good book recommendations, as much as wanting to know which books are not worth reading. To that end I’ll be doing a monthly recap of the books I read with a recommendation so you can populate or weed books out of your TBR pile.

Non-Fiction

Decluttered by Jenny Albertini

I don’t remember where I came across Decluttered, but I think it was a blog post with a

Footprints In Search of Future Fossils – David Farrier

What types of fossils will our society leave behind? What is the half life of our nuclear waste, and what does that mean in the terms of future generations that will still have to deal with it? How is the pollution we’re putting into the atmosphere today going to show up for generations to come?

Thinking in Systems – Donella H Meadows

Just a few pages into this book I was expecting a fairly dense book on the mechanics of systems thinking. In fact I assumed the first chapter was a warmup to deep hard to wrap my head around topics. I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn’t that type of book.

If you’re asshole things get leaked people think you’re an asshole – stop whining Zuckerberg

Reading this article from 404 about Mark Zuckerberg being annoyed that anything he says leaks and causes damage to his company...maybe stop saying shitty things that devalue humans. It's possible Marky that you're being an asshat and many of

The Black Swan – Nassim Nicholas Taleb

This is supposed to be some all fired amazing book about randomness. The title is derived from the idea that Europeans thought all swans were black until they visited Australia and suddenly found a black swan. They had no way of knowing that what they thought was true was untrue until confronted by the evidence.

The Scrollable Timeline is NOT Connection

Years of social media have managed to convince us that a scrollable timeline, a comment box with a characters limit and a like button are the tools we need to use to connect with each other. That is a big fucking lie and if you don’t believe me write me an email and I’ll be happy to show you. - Tiny Corners

Can you do the right thing even when others don’t?

This is the third book in Ryan Holiday's series on the four cardinal virtues from stoic philosophy. Courage is Calling covers courage, temperance is covered by Discipline is Destiny and this covers justice. His coming book will cover wisdom.

Holiday's investigation of justice covers three different areas. First he covers what justice mean

Performative Reading Goals

As we finish up the first month of 2025 people are still all fired up about their goals, though some are already seeing the cracks in the self they projected into 2025. Today I want to address the reading goal and it’s value for the quality of your life and the quality of your reading.

Reading Goals are Awesome (maybe)

I get the impetus for setting a reading goal, you

Will my kids want my books?

Robert Breen says no and he's probably right, though they all say they want some of the books when I ask them today. While I place value on my book collection of a personal nature that exceeds the monetary value of the books, I also realise that as I age I need to talk to my children and give away the ones they want early then do the downsizing myself so as n

Democracy at Work – Richard Wolff

The biggest idea was intrigued by here was radical democracy, which in this context means that only workers have any say in the ways they work and the ways that any surplus (profits) from their work are spent at their place of work.

Decluttered – Jenny Albertini

Decluttered is a different book that I imagined it would be. I expected a book about strategies to reduce the clutter in my home, but I got a bunch more discussion about the systems that bring clutter into our homes and the trauma that may have caused these systems as valid coping mechanisms.

Don’t Confront Powerful People

Once again, don't go into the company of powerful people, particularly white ones, and point out the obviousness of systemic racism. They have a label for that, “identity politics.” When you think independently of the narrative that people are comfortable with, you make them uncomfortable and based on my experience, that is a grave sin. It's certainly not po

On ebooks and ereaders and the value of friction

The question about using Kindle, or any electronic reading device, brings up many emotions for people. Some swear by them and some swear that they make you dumber, while others feel nostalgic for the smell and feel of a book without weighing in deeper than expressing their personal preference.

I've had a bunch of Kin
