Hello Fellow Geminauts,
Now that Summer is in full swing, I am still getting used to having time to work and write. The challenge now is that my wife is home with our toddler. My desk is in the middle of our living space. So we have a school teacher who is in "School's Out For Summer" mode and a toddler who is in "let's explore and get into everything" mode.
Attempting to work in the midst of all that is a wee bit of a challenge.
What to do? What to do?
I thought about leasing an office or a "hot desk" at one of these fancy co-working places. There is a new space within walking distance to my house now. That might be convenient for a quick getaway but the price for a hot-desk is rather obscure. It seems as though I would need to commit for a month. I feel like that is a couple hundred bucks I would rather keep in my wallet for the time being. Plus now that I Googled the place a bunch of creepy ads are following me around the Internet.
Woof!
My solution, for now, is to board a bus and head downtown to the main branch of my local library. I am really enjoying this new perspective. I found that I actually like having a little commute. It gets me out of the house. I see different people living their lives. It gives a new perspective to my own little, sheltered life. I enjoy taking different paths and exploring new parts of the city I live in.
The library itself is a wonderful place to work. There are desks everywhere with power and free wifi. I was skeptical on the first day when some bro was conducting an hour long phone interview with no regard for fellow library patrons. I quickly learned that there is ample room to move if some people are being disrespectful.
So a couple days a week, I ride down to the library and try to bang out some work. Then, I walk around town a bit maybe hang out in the park under the shade trees. I feel lucky and grateful that I live in a place with such rich resources for the community.
This is the power of the commons. Community spaces should be celebrated and protected.
