December 27, 2024, Into the Future

Here I am coming up on yet another year, and I am trying to think of ways to be more creative. I took Christmas week off from my job, so that I can spend time with my family. That's is really a blessing! This Sylvan has also have been working with a friend on a supernatural mystery story. "Lantashi Chalice" is a character in his story :) Hopefully in a few months we can reveal it!

One thing I'm trying is to continue simplifying my tech use. I want to use less "techie" tech, if that makes sense. I don't want my computer throwing video at me all the time - "Pay attention to me!" I want to use my computer less, and when I do use it I want to be creative.

Here are two "techie" rules for me:

Exception, I like music :) My store of choice:

=> Emusic (DRM free)

I'm posting on Gemini, so I imagine there are a lot of people sitting at their Linux computers reading this. I am sitting at a Linux terminal writing it using my favorite editor, Emacs!

What are my goals going forward? Well, my goals always, but again I'm thinking about the new year.

Posting - I wrote a short post yesterday mentioning that I simplified the gemlog a bit. It is now in a long list, so that I don't have to manage separate gmi files. I don't even have to update the single list either. I just upload the file to the server, and an automated process will move the new post (gmi file) in place and create a link to it. Thanks to the suggestion from a friend to do that!

I want to think about the post, not the process of publishing the post. I don't mind writing code to manage the files. I just don't want to manually manipulate them.

On the news thing, well, news is depressing. I see news as pretty much the rest of the web - things are thrown at you constantly. Constant cognitive overload.

I like some independent techie people, like Naomi Brockwell. (check out her latest!)

=> "I have nothing to hide" - The Dangerous Myth About Privacy

I like the audio version of her podcast, using Gnome Podcasts.

Other goals:

My stories about Lantashi are fun. I don't really go anywhere we those. I have some serious stories too, where I have tons of text on my computer that tends to stay there. I should upload it :)

And yet more:

And board games are just fun! Someone bought me a Critical Role version of Clue! One of the things I am going to do today is try that one out!

On that last one, where I live things get cold, but a lot milder than where some of my family are. So in the winter I can still walk around, maybe listen to an audiobook on my L5. Or get some more running in for the spring and summer races coming up.

One more goal:

One thing I see coming like a freight train is that companies are incorporating artificial intelligence, like Copilot, Swift Assist, Chat GPT, Llama, and more. So programmers and writers (and going forward artists and movie makers) don't just have to compete with other people for their jobs. They have to compete with AI too.

So I have to keep studying, and getting better at programming.
