Denwa is a project where I reimagine vintage optical phone cards with new designs. These phone cards were a big part of me growing up - there were no mobile phones yet so the only way to stay in touch with friends (and have some privacy from eavesdropping parents) was to use these phone cards at a payphone.
The cards often featured art, ads or showcased events of the time so to me, they are like a time capsule of what life was like back then in the 80's and 90's. However, the actual designs never really spoke that much to me so I'm redesigning the phone cards using themes that would've gotten me excited back then.
Unfortunately, both the use of these phone cards and the payphones are long gone by now so with this, I'm hoping to keep some of that early 90s spirit alive. I kind of liked it.
Max Headroom started right around the time that these phone cards became popular (1985). How insane would it have been to see this on a phone card back then!

Imagine if BT started advertising popular BBSes on their phone cards?! And yes, you could call a BBS with a payphone^.
