Excuse the explicit Doomerism in the title, but I really have no faith in our ability to carry on in the face of so much bullshit.

The amount of blatantly fake crap out on the internet has always been pretty staggering, but the amount of seemingly real people who just play along with the crap has been skyrocketing. The normie contingent seems to have never gotten the message when they all migrated online over the last ~10 years (give or take) but it's also people I know have been online as long as I have. I can't tell if it's some kind of echo chamber bias ("this supports what I already believe therefore it must be true") or if it's some kind of cynical "the world is so fucked, this awful thing is probably true".

The fascist contingent (we're talking about the explicit fascists here, the true believes. People that read shit by other self-proclaimed fascists and consider themselves part of that milieu, not the rubes like your racist dad that thinks he's a True Patriot but doesn't really have any political opinions. He's happy to participate but he's simply an anonymous part of the "volk", if you will.) is completely at home in this hyperreal hellscape. They are, after all, the architects of this situation. But it's not just the Literal Actual Fascists(tm) anymore. It's every member of the mainstream political spectrum. The American social liberals that pollute the internet like mold are all back onboard the disinfo train because the baddies are back in town.

The US is unlikely to survive for very long if it remains completely unmoored from objective reality through the internet and specifically social media. Either we leave (or are forced to leave) en mass, or climate change will not be a societal concern for the US any longer, because American society will no long exist. I don't know the situation elsewhere in the world, but this collapse will reverberate around the world because of the position that America has managed to weasel it's way into wrt globalization and geopolitics.

Or maybe I'm just trying to make sense of the chaos of the 21st century, who can say really? Maybe I'm the one caught up in the simulation.
