I recently dug out the credentials for a reddit account I use for a music project I restart every few years. I have deleted every other reddit account I've had over the past 4-5 years. Place is just not very enjoyable anymore and the whole rigamarole last year over 3rd party tools pretty much destroyed my enthusiasm for ever wanting to go onto reddit.

I foolishly kept this account, however, because I'd met a small group of like-minded people to discuss and share our interest in a niche within an already niche genre of music.

all the other folks seem to have left, but I was unfortunately sucked into a temporary social media stupor for about a week.

front page is littered with "aitah for doing this thing that I know reddit will agree with?? dopamine, please" and "clever comebacks" that are really just milquetoast responses from people on other social media websites. And let us not forget the "lol dae dumb people didn't vote correctly??" or the terrible liberal (and I'm using that in the historical political science sense, not in the American-centric sense of everything to the left of Satan) hot takes on the various political subs.

all the niche music subs are pretty much dead, the more popular subs are full of "can I make music with this very famous software that is designed specifically for making music" (a topic I wish to talk about further on a later date) and "I did something mundane, please fondle my balls" upvote bait.

I am appalled at how fast I fell back into mindlessly going to reddit whenever I didn't have something else to do. I could have read a book or made music (the thing the reddit acct was created for) or stared at the ceiling in the dark. All things more valuable and important than mindless scrolling.

This particular community, like every other modern social media community, has run it's course in my life. Just like friendster and xanga and myspace and that brief 3 year window when I had facebook. I did have fun times on reddit at one point over the last decade+ but I am no longer the target demo and I do not enjoy the modern paradigm.
