Remember when "nobody wants to work anymore!" was having it's microsecond in the media? Normal people (that is, people that have maintained a shred of humanity in the face of the dehumanizing forces that dominate our lives) understood this to be bullshit but the "smalltown business owner" types that think "welfare queens" are real turned it into their own little slogan.

Almost nobody actually has a problem with "work", they have a problem with "jobs".

You work when you cook dinner, take your dog out for a walk, read a book, play the drums, maintain your garden, go grocery shopping, help your daughter with her math homework or any infinite number of things that require an input of activity on your part to attain something (your favorite meatballs or a good harvest of roses or learning to play along to Tom Sawyer, a healthy and happy dog etc).

A job is doing all that but someone else gets most of the benefits. They also get to take control of your life; when to show up, when to eat, when you can leave. And more and more often, there is no "leaving"; you are expected to be on call, to answer phone calls and emails, to complete tasks for your employer from your home. They tell you what you can and can't say on your public social media accounts. They monopolize your time until they own your very identity. You aren't a human being, you are a profession.

They call you a "tech worker" or a "contsruction worker" or a "healthcare worker" because they need you to internalize the idea that the only activity worthy of your time is economic and always wiithin the context of the employer/employee relationship. That unless you are creating "economic value" (usually for someone else), you aren't really working. All worthwhile activity must be oriented towards commerce. Otherwise you're a lazy good-for-nothing.

That's utter bullshit and the people peddling this idea are literal demons telling you to give up your soul, your very humanity, in exchange for some dust.
