Hello, Gemini space!

Greetings! My name is Jessica, and I stumbled across the concept of Gemini just recently through Mastodon. Someone I follow(ed? I think he deleted his account) was quite enthusiastic about it, and eventually that prompted me to come check it out. For a while now I've had some interest in variations of the "small web" concept, and Gemini seems like an interesting implementation of that. A text-centric protocol where malfeasance is thwarted because you just don't have that many options to be malfeasant with? Where styling is in the hands of the reader, not the content creator? It's kind of like ebooks, but for the web. Anyway, it looked cool enough to play around with.

I do pay for web hosting where I host a site in HTTPS space (I'll pop a link down below), but I couldn't manage to get a Gemini server up and running there. Honestly, I lack the technical nous to debug things like that if they don't work straight away ā€“ my "coding" skills are limited to HTML and CSS, and only as much PHP as I've ever needed to make a Wordpress theme. I can use SFTP, SSH, and terminal text editors like nano just fine, but that only really helps me once I have a stable, functional server. I haven't totally given up, but I decided I'd have an easier time just dipping my toes into Gemini space on someone else's server, and Gemlog.blue seemed like a very beginner-friendly way to do that šŸ™‚ Flounder.online was another tempting option, but considering I already have places to post my content in HTTPS space, I preferred the idea of something that's "Gemini only" (although I know there are proxies).

To introduce myself a bit more thoroughly (!), I'm a socialist living in Melbourne, Australia with my boyfriend/partner Vivian and our delightful tabby cat, Gidget. I love animals, books, gaming, and cooking; Iā€™m also very interested in linguistics, history, technology and society. I imagine the content I'll post to this space being very similar, if not exactly the same (because no images), as the things I post to HTTPS space. If you want, here are some of the places you can find me over there:

=> Jayeless.net, my personal website | The Jayeless.net Microblog, hosted on Micro.blog | My Mastodon account, @jayeless@todon.nl

Obviously I have other profiles too (you'll find many of them linked on the above sites!) but those are what I consider my "main" online presences. Hopefully this will not be the last you see of me in Gemini space šŸ˜‡
