✐ Why_You_Should_Quit_YouTube_–_Part_3:_Google_Exploits_Creators,_It’ll_Get

Even_Worse⠀✐

Posted in Free/Libre_Software, Google, Videos at 8:22 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Summary: Google’s rationale or explanation that it needs to make money out of

YouTube (on the backs of people who actually do all the hard work) is no

justification for technical and legal assaults on the Free software community

THE previous_part of this_series was more of an exploratory overview of

problems with YouTube, focusing on the latest escalation, which is a blunder

for the relationship between Google and Free Software (Google’s Summer of

Underpaid Labour, or GSoC, is discredited by this).

Today, in this third part (with video to come soon as well), we begin to

enumerate the issues with YouTube.

“Financial aspects aside, in the next part we’ll explain the connection between

the financial ambitions of YouTube and why Google is lawyering up against non-

profit Free software projects and volunteers/activists.”First of all, it’s not

even clear if YouTube is profitable. Sure, it has revenue, but lots of expenses

on top of that (including paying some “creators”, not just YouTube staff,

hardware, bandwidth). We’ve done these calculations for years (in IRC mostly)

and we always reach the conclusion that operational costs rise over time. We

also know there’s a financial woe for YouTube; its revenue is actually

decreasing while costs of storage skyrocket because the catalogue is growing

and newer uploads can be very large (HD) files.

Does this justify turning the site into a malicious “app” (with DRM,

proprietary JavaScript, malicious ads etc.) or is it a sign that it’s time to

jog on and find another place for video hosting?

Financial aspects aside, in the next part we’ll explain the connection between

the financial ambitions of YouTube and why Google is lawyering up against non-

profit Free software projects and volunteers/activists. █

Reality Behind Linux Foundation

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/lf-reality-series.webm

Summary: Our new_series looks into the bosses of Linus Torvalds and what

actually drives their agenda, based on the structural and financial aspects

T

HE video above goes through the Linux_Foundation_wiki under June 2023 and then

discusses what the Linux Foundation does with its money, in turn taking note of

this_latest_IRS_filing.

At a later point we’ll focus on events as a source of revenue, the latest new

shells/offshoots, and organisational charts etc.

As noted along the way in the video, Jim Zemlin has this attitude of, “I’m the

boss of Linus Torvalds, hence I’m important.”

Reality, however (based on facts), shows that he’s not important and despite

that he somehow became the boss of Torvalds. Cui bono? The evil companies

wanting to control Torvalds via Zemlin and his corrupt wife, who takes

Microsoft money and defrauds loads of people. It’s “all in the family”…

pretenders oppressing the world’s achievers. Does money ruin everything? Is it

OK for Linux to be controlled by companies that loathe the licence of Linux and

sometimes Linux itself? █

Posted in Deception, Free/Libre_Software, GNU/Linux, Kernel at 8:44 pm by Dr.

Roy Schestowitz

This is what it looked like last year, based on IRS filings:

            🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇Linux_Foundation_offshoots⦈_

Summary: With a subgroup now devoted to the kernel (Linux), why is the Linux

Foundation still boasting “Linux” in its name? The Linux Foundation now

actively promotes operating systems and kernels that aren’t Linux and compete

against Linux.

I

N THE previous_part of this Linux_Foundation series we said we’d explore

structural and financial aspects of the Foundation.

The Linux Foundation isn’t what it seems anymore and its name has been

misleading for years already. As shown above, there’s now a “LINUX KERNEL

ORGANIZATION”, based in the address of the same overpriced office (about 6

million dollars a year as of years ago). In the next part we’ll show how the

Linux Foundation makes its money. It has little to do with the kernel it is

called after. The “LINUX KERNEL ORGANIZATION” is what the Linux Foundation

should have been. Not pursing money from military contractors and thugs like

Microsoft (to fake “growth”). █

Sirius Cannot Retain Anything

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/sirius-crisis-latest-twists.webm

Summary: The crimes of Sirius_‘Open_Source’ aside, it seems like the company

has no chance of surviving; its 25th anniversary is later this year, but it’s

understaffed and running out of clients

THE company that once upon a time sponsored the Free Software Foundation and

KDE resorted to defrauding its own staff in 2011 if not even earlier. Former

staff is finding out and coming to grips with it.

“There are things we cannot publicly state at this moment, but sooner or later

it will be safe to blurt them out.”The company has meanwhile lost several more

clients (the ones it openly admits losing; usually it lies about that loss or

keeps it secret for a long time… for the sake of ‘morale’). Many people,

including managers, are mortified to discover what went on. Some leave and some

are preparing to sue (albeit the company is in hiding, so it’s not easy).

Perhaps none of this should be particularly shocking. I know and I’ve seen

attrition crises in the company over the years (dating back to 2011). But this

one is different. This one the company cannot recover from and the fake

‘founder’ might even up in a jail cell. This is the first part of a series_that

we_hope_can_become_daily in the installments sense. There are things we cannot

publicly state at this moment, but sooner or later it will be safe to blurt

them out. █

Summary: Sirius_‘Open_Source’ scandals have opened a can of worms; why isn’t a

government contractor being held accountable for crimes committed against its

staff?

THE company that once upon a time sponsored the Free Software Foundation (FSF

and KDE among other things) might cease to exist any day now. In the previous

part (with_video) of this_mini-series we argued that, based on the hard

evidence, Sirius loses staff and clients rapidly. There’s almost nobody to

actually run what’s left of the company. If the company tries to recruit

people, they lack the interest. We have evidence of this too.

“As noted above, it’s relevant to Free software advocacy because what we have

here is a former FSF sponsor basically robbing (defrauding) Free software

advocates, who were exploited and subjected to “value extraction” for many

years, grossly underpaid and moreover embezzled behind their backs with a

pension that never existed.”Tomorrow morning we’ll release a video to explain

how British police is failing to respond not only to reports of a crime but

also messages from British MPs. This will lead to further escalations that

generally embarrass the system and there’s room for suspicion that the

“Establishment” (government) is using one hand to wash the other and in turn

wash the face.

This series will hopefully coincide with breakthrough in the progress sense. As

noted above, it’s relevant to Free software advocacy because what we have here

is a former FSF sponsor basically robbing (defrauding) Free software advocates,

who were exploited and subjected to “value_extraction” for many years, grossly

underpaid and moreover embezzled behind their backs with a pension that never

existed.

We’ll hopefully be able to illuminate what’s happening behind the scenes by

disclosure of some redacted communications. █

Topics Covered This Month

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/techrights-topics-overview.webm

Summary: Some of the topics and themes we plan to cover this week or this month

TODAY we started a number of new series ("Why_People_Everywhere_Should_Quit

YouTube", "Inside_the_Real_Linux_Foundation", and "The_End_of_Sirius_Open

Source"), adding those on top of existing and long-running ones (GitHub for two

years now and EPO for 9 years already).

“…we’re trying to take up the pace of blogging, which means more regularly

writing news/updates on strategic topics, maybe more videos, and perhaps multi-

part series that are investigatory in nature.”The video above explains the

direction and priorities not only of the site; we have IPFS, capsules, IRC and

so on. Daily Links still matter a lot as well. But we’re trying to take up the

pace of blogging, which means more regularly writing news/updates on strategic

topics, maybe more videos, and perhaps multi-part series that are investigatory

in nature. Talking to politicians and former colleagues took up a lot of time

lately, but that will pay off (deferred).

The next couple of videos will focus on YouTube and on Sirius_‘Open_Source’.

Articles about Sirius might even last until the end of this year, seeing the

pace at which things are progressing (British authorities are very slow). █

For YouTube Time is Out (running out_of_time)

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/youtube-boycott-thoughts.webm

Summary: YouTube is getting very sinister very fast; we urge people to drop

YouTube, both as viewers (to the extent feasible) and as “creators” (people who

upload their work there)

THE issues with YouTube are rapidly increasing and today we started_a_series

about_it. We’re going to deal with one major issue at the time and at the end

we”ll take stock of the whole.

“This series will likely carry on every day for the coming week.”As noted

earlier today (and also in the video above), one major problem with YouTube is

that after management change it ‘wasted’ no time and immediately cracked down

on people who want an experience that works for them, including Free software

such as Invidious. This is just the start. It’ll get worse.

There’s also a lesson to be learned here about GitHub (Microsoft) hosting for

code, a lesson that wasn’t learned by enough people after the youtube-dl saga.

This series will likely carry on every day for the coming week. We have many

other issues to cover and we’ll explain why YouTube has no future (for people

who value their freedom and their work). █

It's Sunday afternoon, and we all know what that

                   means.

I don't think we've had anything hugely interesting

                   happen the last

week, and the whole 6.4 release really does feel

                   like it's going

fairly smoothly. Knock wood, famous last words, you

                   know the drill.

The diffstat and the commit logs all looks fairly

                   normal. We've got

perhaps a bit more filesystem changes than usual,

                   mostly due to some

xfs fixes. But even that looks larger than it is -

                   it's mostly due to

code movement, not because of any fundamentally big

                   changes per se.

There's some architecture fixes too, but most of

that is just arm64 dts files.

And the bulk of things is driver updates, with gpu

                   and networking

being most noticeable. As is tradition. We have

                   some other networking

                   changes outside of drivers too.

For people interested in the nitty-gritty details,

                   the shortlog is

appended, but nothing there looks all that

                   interesting. Which is

obviously just how I like it. The interesting stuff

                   should happen

during the merge window, and the later release

                   candidates should be as

                   boring as possible.

With a convention NFS server filesystem stack, such

as ext4 on LVM on software RAID, everything is in

the kernel and you can ask kernel people for help,

report issues you see, and so on. If something is

going wrong that creates sub-par performance, the

kernel people will probably want to fix it. But

(Open)ZFS On Linux is outside the kernel, so Linux

kernel people have little reason to particularly

help out and ZoL people may not have the

capabilities to dig into the kernel NFS and disk IO

stacks to understand what’s going on (it’s a bit

out of scope), and even if a problem can be

identified there may not be any good fix. One

reason for this is that the actual code of ZFS On

Linux is also mostly Solaris/Illumos code, which

creates a mismatch between the kernel and ZFS (one

of the areas where this is still quite visible is

                   memory issues with ZFS’s ARC).

After the first day, I was chatting about CSS in a

bar with some friends. Stephan said it’s great that

browsers are shipping so many new features, but we

need people to use them in real projects, share

their experiences in talks and articles, and show

the world what CSS is capable of.

I agree because most of us still need to understand

how groundbreaking some of these additions to the

language are. That can only change if we’re curious

and experiment, share what we’ve learned, and

discuss it, but it’s not enough to rely on people

like Stephanie Eckles, Ahmad Shadeed, Michelle

Barker, Adam Argyle, Bramus Van Damme, Una Kravets,

or Kevin Powell to do that. Especially with CSS-

Tricks dying slowly*, we need more people to give

                   CSS a stage.

We also agreed that we need more people to push CSS

to its limits and explore what else we can get from

This release of openSUSE is relatively tame, it’s a

minor evolution from the previous 15.4 version from

supposed to offer minor improvements and bug fixes,

not exciting new features. In other words, this

release does what it says on the label.

Of note, I think it’s worth pointing out both

Discover and System Settings work better on

openSUSE than most other distributions I’ve tried

recently. Both were more stable and performed

what a phenomenon to experience, what strange times

a distraction from what he stands for and the work

we must do to reverse the hold of exploitative

and to focus our energy against oppression where it

free technology industry with the edu-war-health

industrial complex and the expansion of its

volume. In considerable part, the SEC’s

actions against Coinbase hinge what on

                         cryptocurrencies actually are. Gensler has

frequently said that the vast majority of

                         cryptocurrencies are, in fact, unregulated

securities that his agency should have

He’s just turned 50 and the somewhat indirect

                         – took a year to plan.

Over the past 10,000 years the world has lost

What should you make of it? A full dissection of

the issue — showing, for example, that such

statements distract from the many serious harms

that AI companies have already caused — would

require more time and space than I have here. For

now, it’s worth taking a closer look at what

exactly the word “extinction” means, because the

sort of extinction that some notable signatories

believe we must avoid at all costs isn’t what most

people have in mind when they hear the word.

Understanding this is a two-step process. First, we

need to make sense of what’s behind this statement.

The short answer concerns a cluster of ideologies

that Dr. Timnit Gebru and I have called the

“TESCREAL bundle.” The term is admittedly clunky,

but the concept couldn’t be more important, because

this bundle of overlapping movements and ideologies

has become hugely influential among the tech elite.

And since society is being shaped in profound ways

by the unilateral decisions of these unelected

oligarchs, the bundle is thus having a huge impact

again I’ll feel in the mood to just be 12 again:

                   sad confused and angry.

Disclaimer: This kinda got away from me! Bare with

what is basically a listen along once I get into

the song breakdowns. I highly recommend listening

The CS nerd in me is sad number 0 isn’t an actual

entry. But I figure this requires its own

                   introduction!

For the longest time I have considered a few albums

I love “perfect”. A perfect album to me is one I

can press play on and I never get bored, tired, or

that urge to “ugh let me skip this track” (cough

uncough Drive by Incubus). But especially those

that once I start listening I can’t stop. I just

want to keep listening or if a track comes on I

have to just continue forward. That doesn’t

necessarily mean they have to be “album albums”

where they require that context and ordering – but

just an overall solid album through and through!

In reading opinions of literary analysis, I

sometimes come across large sweeping claims with

little justification. Statements such as “Western

stories focus on a singular power fantasy hero,

while Eastern stories focus on unity to overcome

threats.” Usually they try to tie this in as a

                   cultural analysis.

They’ll point to examples like *John Wick* to

demonstrate their idea of Western stories, then

*Sailor Moon* for Eastern stories. This ends up

painting the stories of both cultures as one

singular idea. It over-simplifies to a point where

the the nuances of the cultures are ignored for the

sake of the author’s thesis statement.

worst. i got stuck in really dangerous thought

patterns, things like “if i were to jump out this

window then i could knock myself out for a week at

least at best”. i was fortunate enough to (almost)

never pull through with these ideas and sought help

when i was at my lowest. within two weeks i got a

first appointment with a psychotherapist in

                   training. preliminary diagnosis: f32.1 moderate

depressive episode. five months later i found

myself in group therapy. i filled out a

questionnaire at the beginning of every session

which had me reflecting on my mental state of the

past two weeks. the result was a score

representative of the severity of my depression.

before my first session i got a score of 33 out of

63, thinking it wasn’t that bad. we weren’t given

the scale until late into therapy where we had the

opportunity to look at our past scores and reflect

on our mental growth. as it turned out, a score of

29 and above is classified as a severe depressive

episode. it hadn’t dawned on me just how messed up

my mind was until then. at my last session, i got a

score of 5. the scale didn’t speak of depression up

                   until a score of 8.

happy to know the\ application firewall OpenSnitch

running it for a few weeks now, and have been

surprised about some of the programs connecting to

the Internet. Some programs are obviously calling

out from my machine, like the NTP network based

clock adjusting system and Tor to reach other Tor

clients, but others were more dubious. For example,

the KDE Window manager try to look up the host name

in DNS, for no apparent reason, but if this lookup

is blocked the KDE desktop get periodically stuck

when I use it. Another surprise was how much

Firefox call home directly to mozilla.com,

                   mozilla.net and googleapis.com, to mention a few,

when I visit other web pages. This direct

connection happen even if I told Firefox to always

use a proxy, and the proxy setting is ignored for

this traffic. Other surprising connections come

from audacity and dirmngr (I do not use Gnome). It

took some trial and error to get a good default set

The Rust pcap library was used to load the

packets from the PCAP file, which contains

the bytes of a DBus Message. It is nice to

use, though it is missing an async API for

loading files. That could be fixed in the

future, but this week mainly focused on a

basic diagram implementation. The bytes can

then be parsed through GDBus into a

                         GDbusMessage, which contains the information

                         to implement the diagram.

Through the parsed message, the diagram can

be implemented. It uses ListView to display

the rows as, aside from having a nice

separation of view and model, it is more

                         efficient because it recycles widgets,

especially since PCAP files could possibly

contain thousands of messages. Each row

contains the elapsed time, path, destination,

interface, and member of the message.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I harbour

tremendous affection for 1980s home computers, and

1990s PCs. The former are fascinating snapshots of

an era I wish I could have lived through, and the

latter are… what I lived through. Having a salary

dwindle, and more people gut them for sleeper PC

but behind the scenes IPTV providers also

work hard to prevent streams being blocked.

Until now, these efforts have never been

discussed in public but today we can reveal

how Flawless IPTV was able to undermine the

Premier League’s blocking program and remain

                         online.

Universal Music Group is in talks with

                         SoundCloud to overhaul music royalty

payments. Here’s the latest. A Bloomberg

report details talks among the companies

encompassing changes to the standard industry

royalty structure. Those familiar with the

matter said the two companies are likely to

reach a conclusion before the end of the

                         year.

I don’t usually post individual release notes

here on the gemlog but this one should have

                         some director’s commentary.

                         Version 1.16.4 is a desktop-focused patch

that addresses several issues with window and

UI behavior. When you have a custom GUI

toolkit that aims to target a wide range of

desktop and mobile operating systems, it is

sometimes a little difficult to keep

                         everything straight especially when the

underlying library (SDL) is not uniformly up-

                         to-date everywhere.

This was one of those releases where you keep

finding little problems every time you make a

candidate build. Did I catch them all?

                         Perhaps!
