My Desk Explained

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/multi-pc-setup.webm

Summary: After various changes (adding plants, 3 large speakers etc.) I’ve

decided to explain how my office is configured for maximal visibility (almost

no need for virtual desktops)

THE other day I was asked about my desk’s arrangement and how it was

facilitating improved workflow, productivity etc. in light of this_post_and

photograph. It was about the site turning 16.5 years old (we’ll soon have 36.5k

blog posts!).

“All the machines run GNU/Linux and the recording above was done using OBS.”The

video above illustrates some of the things I learned through trial and error,

including being able to exercise while working (mostly reading) and

ergonomically important tips/tricks. Being at the desk about 100 hours a week

means that posture and “micro-breaks” are very important. The way different

computers and screens are used is explained in passing (not in-depth; we did

that in past years) and there are changes coming next week while my wife goes

on holiday, rendering her second computer available to me (so a total of 8

keyboards on the desk). All the machines run GNU/Linux and the recording above

was done using OBS. No preparations done for this video; it was 100%

spontaneous. █

Patent_Maximalists_in_UPC_Rota)⠀✐

Posted in Europe, Patents at 1:11 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇Deposed as Chairman May 2021; Not how EPO was made⦈

Summary: Europe’s largest patent office continues to be “Shambles Defined” in

terms of quality and in terms of justice; why doesn’t the mainstream media

raise awareness of this? (Likely political reasons and heavy lobbying, not to

mention bribery of large publishers like the Financial Times)

THE EPO‘s staff union, SUEPO, has just_highlighted this new_article. “The EPO

met again with in-house counsel who are concerned that patent quality standards

are slipping in favour of speedy grants,” says the introduction, but it’s

behind a paywall. Benoît_Battistelli and António_Campinos have done great

damage to promote European_software_patents and inflate_a_bubble. A source has

meanwhile shared with us the way patent attorneys leverage the “Hey Hi” (AI)

hype to push software patents. Bastian Best sent a message yesterday, full of

tracking inside the message, entitled “Software patents in Europe (presentation

slides)” (he’s shamelessly promoting such patents for 15+ years already). He

says: “It’s all about the technical contribution, but what exactly is

“technical” at the European Patent Office? Is it “technical” when engineers

solve hard industrial problems with AI?”

Totally meaningless junk. The rest speaks of “Statistics on AI patent filings

in Europe”. This also mentions “A checklist for structuring software patent

claims” and “A checklist for structuring software patent claims”…

So the EPO has opened itself to such abuse, bolstered further by buzzwords.

Where do the Boards of Appeal stand on the matter? Well, they clearly have no

independence or a mind of their own. Not anymore…

This happens to have been the subject of discussion in blog_comments lately.

“The damage has been done,” the latest comment says. Right next to it we have

this new rant about Calle Josefsson [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], the notorious judge who is

a “yes man” of corrupt EPO managers. These people make a career out of sucking

up to the most corrupt establishment. Prepare for Klaus Grabinsky, another

opportunist who grabbed the chance to serve the abuses. Although there are

plenty of comments there (we’ve archives most of them in IRC), some better than

others, here’s the latest one on “BREAKING: In-person proceedings are still the

“Gold Standard” – Boards of Appeal start to diverge on ViCo (T 2432/19)” (post

by IPKat): “A good question about objections under Article 24 EPC. Indeed, that

question is highly pertinent to every petition for review that, at least in

part, is based upon the imposition of VICO as the format for oral proceedings.

And yet the President of the Boards has no problem appointing himself to the

EBA in respect of such petitions. For example, see the_composition_of_the_EBA

for_R12/22, which has not changed since it was first set almost 1 year ago

[...] Arguably, the participation of the President as a member of the EBA for

cases concerning the validity and/or interpretation of Art 15a RPBA falls foul

of Article 24(1) EPC. It is a shame that the EBA in G 1/21 failed to consider

that point. However, given that the President was excluded under Article 24(3)

EPC from EBA for G 1/21, there is no doubt that, for the same reasons, he MUST

be excluded from all other cases concerning Art 15a RPBA. Any other outcome

would cause (yet more) serious damage to the perception of independence of the

EBA.”

The European Patent Register is cited above. One can see that the patent

microcosm itself is openly admitting that this system is out of control. Will

they go a step further and suggest that the UPC would be a disaster for the

EU’s reputation unless it was stopped in its tracks? SUEPO ought to speak a lot

more often against the UPC. FFII seems a little upset that SUEPO isn’t doing

enough in that area. The UPC is, among other things, a Trojan horse for

software patents. The appointment of Grabinski is a shining clue to that

effect. █

Quite Likely Last Year of Sirius

Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0

http://techrights.org/videos/sirius-almost-nobody-left.webm

Summary: The situation at Sirius_‘Open_Source’ is getting grimmer by the day or

by the week; there’s almost nobody left at the company and those who are still

there look for a way out, an escape from the sinking ship

THE crimes of Sirius aside, as the_police_investigates_these_too_slowly (as

expected all along and right from the start), today we take a quick look at the

company as seen from the eyes of Microsoft (LinkedIn). There seems to be almost

nobody left there; from what we can gather, it’s a very contingency-based semi-

operational mode, trying to retain what’s left of the contracts. A couple of

months ago a reasonably new employee was given more authority, as others left

the company, creating a highly critical skills vacuum.

Will the company reach its 25th anniversary? That doesn’t seem so likely. For

privacy reasons the video above does not show the screen and instead I’m

reading or explaining what I am seeing before me (on a separate computer). █

In the past, eCommerce developers were limited by

the technology they could use. However, today’s

advances in eCommerce development have allowed for

more innovative solutions that can be created using

headless frameworks and Linux servers. This trend

is transforming how eCommerce platforms are built,

Apache CouchDB is a free yet reliable non-

relational or NoSQL database engine. It is written

in Erlang language and natively supports data in

JSON format. The data can be accessed and queried

via the HTTP protocol, making it easier and more

scalable compared to traditional SQL relational

databases like MySQL. CouchDB also offers

                   replication capability and provides high

availability access. This tutorial will show you

how to install CouchDB on AlmaLinux.

I’ve talked about this myself in the past and I

wholeheartedly agree with Jatan on this. While

perusing the internet I’ve seen links that are

formatted in all kinds of ways, even ones that

don’t seem to be formatted at all and are, to my

eye at least, completely indistinguishable from the

                   rest of the body text.

            # ⚓ Jatan Mehta ☛ Colored_vs._underlined_links⠀⇛

Colored text links on the Internet are popular. The

familiar blue touted by a majority of hyperlinks on

the Web goes back to 1993. However, as the linked

article explores, web links used to be underlined

for a decade before they went blue. I think we

should go back to having underlined links

                   everywhere for several reasons.

            # ⚓ University of Toronto ☛ The_time_our_Linux_systems_spend_on

              integer_to_text_and_back_conversions⠀⇛

We run the Prometheus host agent on all of our

Linux machines. Every fifteen seconds our

Prometheus server pulls metrics from all the host

agents, which causes the host agent to read a bunch

of /proc files (for things like memory and CPU

state information) and /sys files (for things like

hwmon information). These status files are text,

but they contain a lot of numbers, which means that

the kernel converted those integers into text for

us. The host agent then converts that text back

into numbers internally (I believe a mixture of 64-

bit integers and 64-bit floats), only to turn

around and send them to the Prometheus server as

text again (see Exposition Formats, also). On the

Prometheus server these text numbers will be turned

back into floats. All of this takes CPU cycles,

although perhaps not many CPU cycles on modern

                   machines.

This tutorial aims to introduce you to the concept

of Linux text processing, highlight its benefits,

and provide an overview of the commonly used text

processing commands. You will also learn about

their use cases and how they can help automate

tedious tasks, making them more manageable in a

                   matter of seconds.

            # ⚓ DebugPoint ☛ Guide_to_Set_up_Full_Wayland_with_Arch_Linux⠀⇛

Arch Linux users may find setting up a custom

install with Wayland complex. Only KDE Plasma and

GNOME have up-to-date Wayland support among all the

mainstream desktop environments. Xfce, LXQt and

other desktops are developing Wayland support, but

                   they are not ready yet.

On the window manager front, Sway has full Wayland

support in Arch Linux. That being said, I wanted to

test how Wayland is performing in Arch and want to

give you a status check as of today.

Virtual machines are an essential tool for running

guest operating systems. If you’ve never heard of

KVMs, you’re not alone. It’s easy to wonder: what

is KVM, and what does it stand for? How can you use

KVM as a virtualization technology in your

                   projects?

Getting started with KVMs on Linux is a simple

process. If you want to run other Linux

distributions or even Windows on your Linux PC, all

you need to do is install a few modules and prepare

your PC for virtualization. Here’s how you can

                   start using KVM on Linux.

At the time, we could see the trend toward centralization

to the vast expense of high-end GPU clusters needed for

was made possible by hundreds of millions of

dollars collected from Americans who thought they

had found an affordable alternative to medical

insurance. Instead, many were saddled with debt.

The conglomerate, however, is showing signs of

strain as the family downsizes its workforce and

sells off some of its holdings. These moves will

free up cash, said an attorney who represents

several family members, and allow them to pay off a

court settlement related to its alleged fraud. Now,

another big debt has come their way: Several family

members face liens placed against their properties

                   for millions in back taxes.

COVID-19 and how hospitals, not COVID-19, had

killed so many people and almost killed her, a

Jerusalem, demolished once, or more than once, in

the past few decades. Other times, it is the ruins

of a village, depopulated in 1948, now poorly

concealed under a forest of pine trees planted by

the Jewish National Fund. Sometimes it is the

rubble of a bullet-strafed home in the occupied

Syrian Golan, which came to its knees during the

1967 invasion. Other times, it is the rubble of a

residential building bombed during one of the

assaults on the besieged Gaza Strip—in 2008, ’09,

’12, ’14, ’19, or ’21. Or, if you are reading this

a few years from now, it may well be the wreckage

of Silwan, Masafer Yatta, and the Naqab, towns that

                   are still bustling but threatened.

As you breeze through this landscape, you will

likely come across towns and refugee camps with

posters of our martyrs pinned all over the walls.

The dates on some of the posters may be difficult

to decipher, but you can guess when they were first

plastered by looking at their condition: If they

are pristine and vibrant, they’re fresh off the

press; if brittle and faded, damaged by rain, dirt,

or stray bullets, and peeling off the walls, they

might be from some time ago—the Second Intifada or

one of the intifadas that came after. Many, likely

most, of the faces will be unfamiliar to you, for

they have been killed outside the international

news cycle—their deaths marked only by fleeting

local headlines. If you slow down to read, you

might find portraits of a father and a son sharing

the same wall, an uncle and a niece, sometimes from

the same year, sometimes generations apart.

for human rights protections to be included within

                   this Global Plastics Treaty.

On November 28, 2022, countries began treaty

instrument to end plastic pollution by the end of

2024. Senior HRW researcher Katharina Rall stated

that “the race to tackle the plastic crisis and

prevent a climate catastrophe requires every

country to tackle these problems at their common

contributor to the global climate crisis, is “the

Joe Biden is a reluctant culture warrior. For the

first half of his presidency, Biden’s theory of

politics was based on the idea that Democrats could

best rebuild from their losses of the last decade

by winning back white working-class voters. This

required focusing on bread-and-butter issues while

former US national security adviser helped

                   orchestrate in September 1973. Kissinger’s

controversial career is littered with scandals and

                   and torturers abroad, domestic wiretapping,

reminds us, secretly sabotaging the quest for peace

in Vietnam. But his pivotal role in the covert US

abetting the rise of the infamous dictator Augusto

Pinochet, will always be the Achilles’ heel of

                   Kissinger’s much-ballyhooed legacy. 1

The declassified historical record leaves no doubt

government of Socialist Party leader Salvador

Allende. Once Allende was overthrown, Kissinger

became the leading enabler of Pinochet’s repressive

human rights atrocities in the weeks following the

coup. At a private June 1976 meeting with Pinochet

in Santiago, Secretary of State Kissinger offered

There are lots of reasons why trademark

mother of all those reasons is, of course,

the USPTO’s inability to cast a critical eye

towards the applications its receives. Far

think related, common cause of stupid

trademark disputes is when foreign languages

get involved. What is an obviously generic or

happened. Our neihgbor kept putting a bulldog puppy

into our kid’s arms, and after a while everyone

                   bulldog.

We also had another dog, a fast mutt obviously

built for racing, and the bulldog grew up

alongside, thinking she had to run fast. And she

did — she didn’t have much stamina, but she could

really good domestic season for them and one that

was hard thought. Xavi has been at the club for 1.5

Seasons and has improved the team’s defense

left the club, the attack has been lackluster, and

I guess one way to help with attacking is to make

sure you don’t let any goals through.

Idealistically, the club are not playing “Barcelona

Jesus and Mary Magdalene. A struggling carpenter’s

son who found his true calling in life, a rich and

Stanton, the actor, singer and renaissance man, who

I really admired for his candor, his singing and

his straight-forward acting. I wrote the story a

few weeks after his death in September 2017. I’ve

put some autobiographical elements in it, but

that’s the reader’s inclination. It is what it is.

A bit harsh, explicitly outspoken (x-rated), here

Over the years i’ve heard and read many negative

experiences of psychiatrists. Most of the people

                   relating these experiences are women and/or afab;

most of the psychiatrists involved are cis men.

Common themes are arrogance, condescension and

dismissiveness – not particularly surprising, given

the presence of not only gender dynamics, but also

things like class privilege on the part of the

psychiatrists involved. The stories range from

“that wasn’t so great” through to “I was actively

                   psychologically damaged or traumatised”.

Although, in theory, one can lodge complaints about

these things with various professional and

government bodies, it’s unlikely to be a trivial

process in practice. In fact, it’s likely to

require a substantial amount of resources, both

psychological and financial – and many clients of

psychiatrists simply don’t have these resources.

Worse, there can even be limitations on sharing

information via informal channels: here in

Australia, private Facebook groups can be held

liable for defamation if people in that private

think something fundamental was lost after

Tails 5.13 looks like a small release, but it

your anonymity and keep your files secure at all

times. Starting with this version, all newly

generated Persistent Storage and LUKS encrypted

volumes will be using version 2 of the Linux

Unified Key Setup (LUKS) disk encryption

                   specification by default.

As you can imagine, LUKS2 offers stronger

cryptography by default when compared to the first-

                   generation LUKS specification. Unfortunately, this

release doesn’t enable LUKS2 on existing Persistent
