✐ IBM_Has_Killed_OpenSource.com,_Rejecting_the_Open_Source_Way⠀✐
Posted in IBM, Red_Hat at 7:28 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz
Summary: IBM seems to have shut down OpenSource.com (it’s online but inactive;
nobody works on it anymore). The Linux_Foundation did_the_same_to_Linux.com_in
2019 and then_trashed_it (because it doesn’t care about Linux, except as a
brand to milk).
THIS does not shock us, but it certainly saddens us. IBM doesn’t seem to mind
the fact that Red Hat revenue is growing, according to IBM. Red Hat is
suffering layoffs and too little information is provided about what or who is
impacted.
It has been sad to see this as we’ve noted both the_layoffs and the_fate_of
opensource.com. Now it is becoming increasingly confirmed that IBM does to
“Open Source” what it did to CentOS a couple of years ago.
“Wikipedia says that in December last year IBM had 288,300 employees.”To
explain our allegation quite succinctly, bear in mind opensource.com (where Ben
Cotton played a prominent role) has not been active for quite some time, which
is extremely unusual. The timing gave a clue because of the announcement of
layoffs. Days ago Ben Cotton wrote a blog post saying he was among those who
had been deemed “redundant” (that’s absurd as he’s a very essential worker).
“No activity since April 23, i.e. the layoffs.”My wife has been reading
opensource.com every day for nearly a decade and Cotton is one of the first
people who came to her mind in relation to this site because he used to be very
active there (a lot less in recent years). She says she loved his articles, so
it’s a tragic loss for IBM. Could they find nothing else at their oversized
company to ‘cut’? Wikipedia says that in December last year IBM had 288,300
employees. So why give Ben Cotton the pink slip? He too is baffled by this.
Yesterday Phoronix also mentions Ben Cotton being laid off (50 or more comments
there, but we’d rather not link to Phoronix).
🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽⦇Ben_Cotton;Also_opensource.com⦈
He’s the only one (so far) that we saw speaking about this in public. Did IBM
offer them some severance package that mandates silence (other opensource.com
people probably also lost their job)?
Seeing that the opensource.com Web site has not been active for quite some
time, we’re taken a look at the_Twitter_account, which is stale.
🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽⦇opensource.com_in_Twitter⦈_
And they only link to old articles, nothing new. Even a bot could do this. They
post only about one “tweet” per day and the stuff isn’t new. Notice that the
profile links to a Mastodon instance.
🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽⦇opensource.com_in_Mastodon⦈_
Mind the dates. Yes, that’s right. No activity since April 23, i.e. the
layoffs. So we’ve checked if they reply to someone, e.g. question/s about site
stoppage, but no replies can be found in either_Twitter or the_Fediverse. No
response to anybody. That does not look too good. █

Not the Open Source Way
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/redhat-opensource-com.webm
Summary: The most disturbing aspect of what IBM does to the community (users of
CentOS, volunteers in Fedora, readers of OpenSource.com etc.) is the lack of
media coverage; IBM has captured a number of ‘news’ sites that mindlessly
promote IBM (barely disclosing the sponsorship) and almost nobody questions
IBM’s motives
THIS year we did_not_write_much_about_IBM, but over a week ago we noticed that
last month’s layoffs had_an_effect_on_OpenSource.com_(Open_Source_Way) and
other sites of Red Hat.
Knowing that the media barely_covers_or_doesn't_cover_IBM_layoffs (the layoffs
are not reported until/unless they are very, very considerable), we decided to
write about it and today we publish a video. That’s not unlike Microsoft by the
way. Microsoft must have fired 20,000-30,000 people this year alone (4.5
months) if one counts temps and contractors. Microsoft is collapsing but it is
rigging/cheating the market, bribing the media, defrauding shareholders, and
worse. Where’s the media?
“Microsoft is collapsing but it is rigging/cheating the market, bribing the
media, defrauding shareholders, and worse. Where’s the media?”Generally
speaking, the only community IBM understands is the “shareholders community”.
Earlier today we wrote about Ben Cotton and his important role in Fedora, not
just his past role in OpenSource.com. Why did IBM let him go? Why is
OpenSource.com, among other sites, inactive? By now, we think, dozens of blogs
or news site should have written something about this. The same is true for
Linux.com, which back in 2019 became inactive. Where was the media back then?
That just comes to show what sort of “media” is left… a lot of defectors
(journalists-turned-marketers). SJVN too has become a stenographer of the Linux
Foundation because that’s where the money is.
“The video above speaks about the track record of IBM before ranting about the
lack of media scrutiny.”So we’ve ended up with ‘news’ sites that fail to
investigate/report Microsoft layoffs, fail to condemn massive bank bailouts,
and while Microsoft keeps attacking Linux nobody says a thing, except lies
(“Microsoft loves Linux”). 20+ years ago when SCO filed the infamous lawsuit
there was still media online. The same was true when Iraq was invaded. When
important news goes under the radar society is worse off. When it comes to the
EPO, we’ve become almost a sole voice. Why don’t news sites explain what’s
going on there? A decade ago they used to actually cover scandals, but they
suddenly stopped mentioning the EPO except when EPO management paid them to
produce/reprint some piece.
When sites like OpenSource.com and Linux.com just die so quietly (no pushback)
one has to wonder to what degree corporations’ sheer power squashed the press
and the Web. The video above speaks about the track record of IBM before
ranting about the lack of media scrutiny. █

YouTube is Not Free
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/youtube-closing-down.webm
Summary: YouTube is becoming increasingly unacceptable, both for viewers and
“creators” (what Google calls people who do all the actual work); it’s time to
get out because Google/Alphabet is “farming” people for money, it’s not “free
hosting”
THIS Web site started publishing videos routinely way back in 2020 (the second
lockdown in the UK). The motivation was explained at the time (scarce resources
like time had been freed up by the pandemic response) and we spent several days
researching how or where to publish videos rapidly. We checked a number of
options; YouTube barely was one, even though we previously (about a decade ago)
filed hundreds of videos there, as mere copies of what was published here in
Techrights.
“It’s barely even a site anymore, it’s a JavaScript “webapp” that returns
invalid pages until proprietary scripts are being fully allowed.”YouTube has
gotten worse and worse over the years.
Spamification of YouTube, being a video-centric social control media, was
covered here many times before, especially in early 2022 when we saw channels
defecting to the marketing ‘industry’ and more ads being imposed while actual
creators get de-monetised and lose viewers. The goal was becoming money-making,
but the revenue has since decreased and the longtime chief of YouTube stepped
down (she was one of the first employees in Google).
“YouTube is generally a moving target. If you settle in YouTube today, you
don’t know what it will be tomorrow.”Invidious no longer works for all videos
and some browsers, especially with particular extensions, cannot render the
site. It’s barely even a site anymore, it’s a JavaScript “webapp” that returns
invalid pages until proprietary scripts are being fully allowed.
Now there are plans [1,2] to prevent people from watching videos unless/until
they watch ads. Think that’s bad? Wait for what comes after that. Some
possibilities are explained in the video above. YouTube is generally a moving
target. If you settle in YouTube today, you don’t know what it will be
tomorrow. One day it will be offline for sure. █

This being rc2, it's been a fairly calm week as
people are only
starting to find any issues from the merge window,
but it all looks
fine. The stats are unusual, in that it's about a
third drivers
(mostly gpu, some media and networking), a third
filesystems (ext4,
btrfs, and xfs), and a third "miscellaneous"
(mostly selftests and
documentation updates, but there's some arch
updates and some core
kernel code too).
The shortlog is appended, it's easy enough to just
quickly scroll
through it to get a flavor of the kinds of fixes
have been going

# ⚓ Distro Watch ☛ Review:_Rhino_Linux_(Beta)⠀⇛
I want to underline that Rhino Linux is in its
early stages of development. The snapshot I was
using was a development release of a rolling
platform, built on Ubuntu’s development branch. In
other words, we should expect some issues and
unpredictability. In fact, I would have been
surprised if there had not been a few problems.
Early on there were a few glitches. The live media
wouldn’t boot in UEFI mode which is a problem on
newer hardware. I also found Calamares was prone to
crashing during its clean-up phase, preventing the
system from booting. I could work around these
problems, but it would be a barrier for anyone not
familiar with using the command line and chroot
environments.
After those initial issues, things actually became
pretty comfortable for me while using Rhino. The
distribution is a pleasantly medium weight, I like
the initial welcome wizard which helps us configure
a few things, and Xfce offers a pleasant, stable
user interface. The application menu is lightly
populated, encouraging us to install software we
need beyond the bare basics. Apart from some issues
with Firefox, the included software worked well.
The key feature though of Rhino Linux is its
package manager. I found it worked quite well.
Really, this is just glue binding together multiple
package managers behind the scenes, but it works
unusually well. It’s fairly quick, the packages and
their sources are neatly organized, and it makes
upgrading software much more streamlined for the
user.
It’s still early days for Rhino Linux, but it’s off
to a good start. If the developers can sort out a
few issues with the start-up process and maybe
remove GNOME Software so people aren’t tempted to
use it over the prescribed package manager, I think
it will be a good experience.
A lot of people have been saying they’d like to see
a rolling flavour of Ubuntu and now it is here.
It’s not an entirely smooth experience yet, but
it’s close. The one thing I feel is missing is a
method to rescue or rollback system upgrades,
perhaps using Btrfs snapshots, so that following
Ubuntu’s development branch doesn’t break the
system. Once some rollback method is in place, I
think it will make Rhino a very appealing, Ubuntu-
compatible rolling release platform.

The 26-pin connector is a port used in the GDR, which

A key component of any processor is instruction decoding:
analyzing a numeric opcode and figuring out what actions
need to be taken. The Intel 8086 processor (1978) has a
complex instruction set, making instruction decoding a
challenge. The first step in decoding an 8086 instruction
is something called the Group Decode ROM, which
categorizes instructions into about 35 types that control
how the instruction is decoded and executed. For
instance, the Group Decode ROM determines if an
instruction is executed in hardware or in microcode. It
also indicates how the instruction is structured: if the
instruction has a bit specifying a byte or word
operation, if the instruction has a byte that specifies
the addressing mode, and so forth.

As Half-Life modding matured, some really
interesting inventions appeared. MetaMod was a C++
framework that interposed itself between the server

inject custom behaviour into an existing mod. I
didn’t understand enough C++ to write MetaMod
plugins, but that didn’t matter: AMX Mod and later
AMX Mod X let you write custom plugins using a
simpler C-style language called Pawn (known back
then as “Small”). This enabled an explosion of ways
for operators to tweak their game servers: quality-
of-life improvements for players, reserved player
slots for members, and delightfully bonkers
gameplay changes. I remember having my mind blown

further afield, in the System III manuals, originally
produced in 1980, we see the same as PWB, a merged intro
document (now just named intro again), and the same text,
the Sixth Edition text minus the secret place commentary.
So whatever merges of documentation took place between
PWB 1.0 and 3.0, it seems the updated text from the
Seventh Edition was never picked up, and the modified
line persisted through to this point. Checking forward,
this text persists into the release of PWB 5.0. The first
release of System V only changes “UNIX” to “the UNIX

documentation in the PWB 5.0->System V transition.

The publishers’ proud claim that this is the
first full-length study for 20 years is not
true. The best reason for a second try is
that Orwell is worth it. Born as he was into
a world at war, a biography of Orwell is
almost a running history of that world in 46
years – years in which he hammered himself
into a writer of monstrous talent, enormous
breadth, and enduring significance. In spite
of old colonial money on both sides of the
family – sugar and opium on the English side,
Burmese teak on the French – it was as a man
of the left that Orwell took a sharp and
personal interest in struggle wherever he
found it. At the same time, for someone who
swept so wide (his Eastern Service BBC
wartime scripts were outstanding) he also
ground exceeding small. One moment we find
him discussing nationalism and imperialism as
great historical tides, the next moment he is
an imperial policeman lying flat on his
belly, shooting an elephant he didn’t want to
shoot in a village he didn’t want to police.
A jeering crowd and a man at bay – it was in
small things such as these that Orwell lifted
his sights and found his range.
In recent times, the appeal has gone beyond
the writing. He has become a trope, a meme, a
signifier, a symbol, a moral force, a patron
saint of lost causes and begetter of hopeful
ones. He thought working for the BBC was a
lost cause, but that didn’t stop the
corporation sticking a statue of him at the
front door. There he stands outside
Broadcasting House, like a doorman spoiling
for a fight or looking for a light, however
you see him. His deeply etched face, like Big
Brother himself, has become part of our
culture. Taylor reckons Orwell is not now
just a popular writer “but someone who has
quarried his way down into the heart of the
human condition”. Want to give your op-ed a

how solar storms can release charged particles that
can interact with Earth’s magnetosphere and disrupt
power grids, satellite communications, and other
technological systems, including the Internet.
He discussed the 1859 Carrington Event. Widely
considered a catastrophe, the Carrington Event had
significant impacts on telegraph systems, which
were the primary means of long-distance
communication at that time. The Carrington Event
spiked electric currents in telegraph lines,
causing widespread disruptions, damaging telegraph
equipment, and even leading to some telegraph
offices catching fire. However, the event did not
have significant impacts on other aspects of
society, as the infrastructure at that time was
relatively simple compared to today.
Ulrich also explored the challenges of mitigating
the impacts of solar storms on the Internet,
including the need for better monitoring,
forecasting, and resilience measures. It’s a great
outline of the issues in CME events.

where rooftop solar could best supply

work is published in the journal
Environmental Research: Sustainability and

# ⚓ IOP Publishing ☛ Technical_feasibility_of_powering
U.S._manufacturing_with_rooftop_solar_PV⠀⇛
The use of renewable electricity is vital for
the decarbonization of industry. Industrial
firms source renewables through off-site
power purchase agreements or on-site
installations, though the latter currently
supplies <0.1% of industrial electricity
demand in the U.S. Manufacturing buildings
typically have large, flat rooftops that are
ideal for solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays.
This study investigates the feasibility of
using rooftop solar PV to cover the net
annual electricity needs of industry across
all U.S. states and manufacturing sectors.
Modeled electricity supply intensity for
solar PV arrays is compared with the
electricity demand per unit of floorspace for
average manufacturing buildings derived from
the U.S. Department of Energy Manufacturing
Energy Consumption Survey. Results show that,
depending on geographical location, rooftop
solar PV can completely fulfill the
electricity requirements of 5%–35% of
manufacturing sectors considered on a net
annual basis (assuming net metering).
Furniture, textiles, and apparel
manufacturing can be powered through on-site
means in nearly every location, representing
2% of U.S. manufacturing electricity use and
6% of floorspace. Considering seasonal
potential during summer months expands the
list of feasible sites, particularly in the
U.S. Southwest. Compared to off-site sourcing
of renewable energy, pursuing on-site PV
installations can also enable manufacturers
to maintain limited operations during periods
of grid disruption, especially when coupled
with on-site energy storage. Overall, the
results indicate a substantial physical
opportunity for industrial firms to expand
rooftop solar PV from currently low levels to
help meet decarbonization goals.

Over his 20 years as president, Erdoğan has

RcppSimdJson wraps the fantastic and genuinely
impressive simdjson library by Daniel_Lemire and

engineering to obtain largely branch-free code,
coupled with modern C++ and newer compiler
instructions, it results in parsing gigabytes of
JSON parsed per second which is quite mindboggling.
The best-case performance is ‘faster than CPU
speed’ as use of parallel SIMD instructions and
careful branch avoidance can lead to less than one
cpu cycle per byte parsed; see the video of the
talk_by_Daniel_Lemire

Ransomware actors aim to spend the shortest amount

means the encryption they employ is shoddy and
often corrupts your data. That in turn means
restoration after paying ransoms is often a more
expensive chore than just deciding not to pay and
working from our own backups.
# ⚓ Our_Definition_of_Harm_Is_Harmful_–_FunnyMonkey⠀⇛
In April 2023, the class action lawsuit against
Illuminate Education was thrown out because the
judge in the case determined that the people whose
data was impacted by the breach could not show any
harm, or any instances of identity theft, from the
breach. This decision is both fully in line with
past situations where companies have been let off
the hook, and completely misrepresents and
underestimates the various, different ways people
get hurt by data breaches.
To put it in a different way: the judge’s decision
shows how, in some cases, things that are defined
as legal don’t come close to what is right. The way
we define harm is harmful.
Some background on the Illuminate data breach, and
what can only be described as an epically inept
response stretching across months. The impacts of
this breach were first observed in New York City
public schools in early January.

Well, folks, I finally took out my Harley

waiting for this all winter. Wrenching and
quenching… my desire to face the music. Will
she purr (like a newborn kitten) or will she
whirr (like an old angry bird)? My rapid-eye
motion instantly pushed me into a sapid sly
notion of euphoria, grasping for air… do I
dare take the next turn without ending up in
a fucking churn (of things)? Perturbations,
man, one emotion on top of the other, that’s
all! Nothing else. Stay calm, breathe, look
ahead… and just dance-a-long with the fucking
dead!

There are patterns which pervade all
practice, whether they be policies,
processes, roles, or duties. Where these
patterns interface with one another, they
interact, sometimes reinforcing one another,
sometimes interfering with one another. Most
of all, at scale, they form functioning
entities, whether a team, department, or
company. Many of these patterns are common to
most, or all, entities of a type. Some of
these patterns are unique to an entity. These
unique patterns are proprietary and
differentiating.

appearance of words in that area,
something allegedly in the head
agonizing over whether those words re-
present those which said something
entertained just before directing
fingers to make them so in said little
visual space, a perpetual repaint of
all the notions making up all that,

So, here is a response to your response

Bubble looks pretty cool. And yet it’s

How can Pod start-up be accelerated on nodes in
large clusters? This is a common issue that cluster

This blog post focuses on methods to speed up pod
start-up from the kubelet side. It does not involve
the creation time of pods by controller-manager
through kube-apiserver, nor does it include
scheduling time for pods or webhooks executed on
it.
We have mentioned some important factors here to
consider from the kubelet’s perspective, but this
is not an exhaustive list. As Kubernetes v1.27 is
released, this blog highlights significant changes
in v1.27 that aid in speeding up pod start-up.
§ Parallel container image pulls
Pulling images always takes some time and what’s
worse is that image pulls are done serially by
default. In other words, kubelet will send only one
image pull request to the image service at a time.
Other image pull requests have to wait until the
one being processed is complete.

Our Machine Learning in Linux series focuses on
apps that make it easy to experiment with machine
learning.
Imaginer is GTK4 software which lets you generate
pictures using AI. You supply a text prompt,
consisting of a collection of words to describe an
image, and an AI model creates an image based on
the words. Imaginer uses Stable Diffusion and other
deep learning, text-to-image models to generate the
images.
An extremely interesting area of research relates
to these deep learning text-to-image models. We’ve
published reviews of software that uses Stable
Diffusion. Our reviews of Easy Diffusion, Stable
Diffusion web UI, and InvokeAI noted each software
program requires downloading large models. The
software performs best when using a machine with a
good dedicated graphics card. That’s not the case
with Imaginer.

According to data from W3Techs, WordPress was used by 43% of

This widespread usage, combined with persistent security
vulnerabilities, has put a target on WordPress’s back.
Malicious hackers have come to view attacks exploiting

Securing WordPress sites against damaging attacks is a
challenge, as new vulnerabilities are constantly being

frequently breached with emerging attacks. In this article, we
introduce a minimum impact solution that leverages predictive
analysis detection and automated remediation, and demonstrate
its effectiveness in securing WordPress sites against attacks
exploiting both new and known flaws.

Modern processors come with all kinds of power management
features, which you don’t typically notice as a user
until you start a heavy program and hear the CPU fan spin
up. Back in the early 1990s however, power management was
largely unheard of, meaning that a CPU with nothing to do
would run through an idle loop that dissipated about as
much power as a real computing task. [Michal Necasek]
noticed this while experimenting with DR-DOS 6.0 in a
virtual machine – his laptop fan would start running on
full blast whenever he opened the VM. His search for a
solution to this annoyance led him down a fascinating
journey into the intricacies of DOS power management.

The gamification of social media and the resulting
negative downstream effects are something we all
should be keenly aware of. The larger a network
becomes, the more the forces multiply and this
becomes bigger and bigger of a problem.
When it comes to Bubble/GS.org, scale-wise there’s
plenty of time to consider appropriate

it a step more private — and perhaps
psychologically healthy — is to hide the names of

# ⚓ Illuminations⠀⇛
While going for a slow walk down Writer’s Lane, on
this fine Sunday, I suddenly remembered the first
free verse poem I ever wrote, back in the mid 90s
(later published as the leading poem in my first
book of poetry, Ormmänniskan [Serpent Man], in
2015).
My father had died the year before, in 1994, and I
was utterly lost. He was my mentor, my introduction
into the arts, into literature and specifically
poetry (he was an aspiring poet back in the early
1940s, but got desillusioned [to say the least] by
the war, stationed on the Swedish-Norwegian border
all through-out his active service, and started
drinking at an early age, found his “safe place”,
his own steady pace in life – a periodic abuse of
alcohol, a slowly progressing disease that
eventually took his life at the age of 74). The
overwhelming grief I felt was double-edged. I had
been there myself, drank far too much in my early
twenties, later went into a self-imposed exile in
the U.S. and Mexico and fell into an addictive
world of mescalin, DMT and psilocybin. I came out
of it, in the early 90s, and never went back. My
father stood by me. And my mother, of course.
Without them, I wouldn’t be here. And that’s that.
Illuminations. And anxiety, passion, fright,
darkness, pain, sorrow, love and hope.
