Summary: The above LibrePlanet talk by Joseph Turner was_uploaded_by_the_FSF 5

days ago (slides_here; PeerTube_link); From the official page: “The ushin

project explores Org mode for peer-to-peer deliberation. Ushin offers the seven

shapes (or kinds of meaning) deliberative structure for mutual understanding by

distinguishing facts, feelings, needs, thoughts, topics, actions, and people.

When communicating over the hyperdrive peer-to-peer network, you have full

control over your data. With no central authority to censor “misinformation,”

decision-making power is distributed. A subjective moderation system inspired

by TrustNet makes it easy to find sources of information you can trust. Org

mode is already an effective tool for organizing personal knowledge, and we

want to use it to deliberate collective issues. Ushin combines these ideas into

a fun and easy-to-use plain-text system for discussing important issues free of

censorship, bots, and trolls through community curation.”

Summary: A look back at what happened in Sirius_‘Open_Source’ last year

THE last year of Sirius (CEO left already) is easy to recall in light of an old

recording of a 2-hour meeting. After the company had secretly_plundered_its_own

staff it was desperately chasing clients while abusing and underpaying staff,

as we explained before.

In the name of “cost savings” (nope!) it adopted “clown computing” and then it

let go of a physical office. It was changing servers by getting rid of its own.

Everything it had left was a virtual asset… there were no physical assets left.

Such facts have been mentioned since, even in the meeting, which brought up

potential clients. It’s worth noting that these clients never became actual

clients of Sirius and the company was trying to rebrand or reinvent itself as

SiriUS (it was pronounced Sir… US).

“That the company secretly plundered members of staff is something that wasn’t

confirmed until this year. Now we work towards accountability

(prosecution).”The manager who left last month was basically reporting to

staff, showing his graph presentation while talking about sales, engineering,

infrastructure, outsourcing, support, projects etc. Of course it all become a

complete disaster. Almost an hour in he was summarising the re-infrastructuring

I first considered leaving the company in 2019 (after the likely illegal

contract-signing, then the NDA and the bullying), but last year I was already

sure I’d leave. That the company secretly plundered members of staff is

something that wasn’t confirmed until this year. Now we work towards

accountability (prosecution). █

                   Hi list,

I'd like to announce mesa 23.0.3. I've been working

                   back through the

list of commits that needed a little bit of work to

                   apply cleanly, and

that's starting to come through here, so there are

                   some more patches

than we'd usually see at this point. The good news

                   is that the changes

are all across the tree, with no one subsystem

                   seeing too many changes.

                   Cheers,

introduces a wide range of improvements and new

                   features across multiple architectures.

                   Here’s what’s new.

            # ⚓ LibreBoot ☛ Libreboot_–_Libreboot_20230423_released!⠀⇛

Libreboot provides boot firmware for supported x86/

ARM machines, starting a bootloader that then loads

your operating system. It replaces proprietary

BIOS/UEFI firmware on x86 machines, and provides an

                   improved configuration on ARM-based chromebooks

supported (U-Boot bootloader, instead of Google’s

depthcharge bootloader). On x86 machines, the GRUB

and SeaBIOS coreboot payloads are officially

supported, provided in varying configurations per

machine. You can find the list of supported

                   hardware in the Libreboot documentation.

The last Libreboot release, version 20230413, was

released on 13 April in 2023. This new release,

Libreboot 20230423, is released today on April

                   23rd, 2023.

This is marked as a testing release, though it is

basically stable. We’ve been going at it like

crazy, on a big spree adding more mainboards from

coreboot. Some fixes to the build system were also

made, since the last release only 10 days ago.

The priority for Libreboot is to add as many new

boards as possible, from now to the next stable

release (ETA Q3 2023), with many testing releases

in between. Release early, release often. Rigorious

                   testing ensues.

            # ⚓ How_to_Change_Hostname_in_Linux_|_Temporary_And_Permanent⠀⇛

The hostname is an identifier every Linux Operating

System has on the network. By default, the hostname

is set during the installation process of the Linux

Operating System. However, the user can manually

set it after the installation at any time according

to the requirements. Various scenarios can require

you to change the hostname of your Linux Operating

System, such as deploying a Local Server/domain.

Also, having a more meaningful hostname allows your

PC to be easily accessed instead of using its IP

                   Address. Whatever the case is.

Volunteers looked at recent stories about deaths

                   and the community.

Some deaths were suicides, some were confirmed

                   accidents

and other deaths had no official cause.

We thought long and hard about what all these

                   deaths had in common

and found that the name Disguised Work gets to the

                   root cause of the problem.

Rather than focus on how they died,

we want to talk about why.

Over the years I got used to the simple Switch

be able to configure which ports are tagged/

untagged on which VLANs which I could then bridge

later to specific interfaces. This page has since

been removed for a more flexible/powerful subsystem

that OpenWRT is implementing called DSA. I’m still

new to this, however, I had to recently configure a

similar interface-to-vlan layout in this new

section. It is now listed under the interface

bridge configuration page but it has the similar

table layout with the same set of options. For

example, one LAN port as a vlan access port

(untagged) and two LAN ports as vlan trunk ports

(tagged) both carrying two separate vlan-networks.

The fiftieth day of that summer had come. The wee

fellowship had already went through the eastern

side of the Holy Borders into a region of raids and

battles, where few ventured, and fewer still made

their abode. Paladins had not ventured here in

three peaceful years, for the orcs beyond the

mountain had not yet recovered from their last

defeats. You might expect the odd forester who

counted the woods as its home. Rena could relate,

though her forest home was far away in the north,

orcs were as close too, and though trees and bushes

differ, their souls were just as wise. Harder

still, despite the stories, would be to find some

criminal hiding there in the woods. No, for those,

as a last resort, would favor sewers and decrepit

A teacher once put two of us to the board; the task

was to assign the months to the seasons. My

thinking went along the lines of “December is

pretty cold, that must be winter, therefore winter

is December, January, and February.” Years later I

came to understand that for some spring is defined

as starting on the equinox; from that one might

derive April, May, and June. This could be a

rounding error; one could easily truncate down

instead of rounding up. Neither of these triads

were very good; we were being taught the Orthodox

American System somewhere the seasons ran to three.

cold and grey. Today the sun came out and it went

                   back to being hot again.

A few days ago I watched -From Noob To Power User

I followed the video and installed it myself. I

Hiding messages is not new. Before the digital age,

messages were hidden with invisible ink, subtle

indentations in paper, messages written in Morse

code that are knitted into an item of clothing, and

even tattooing messages under the hair of

                   messengers.

Ideally, the original message is not noticeably

degraded by presence of a hidden message. As a

result, the most effective techniques tend to make

use of data that contains a lot of redundancy, such

as raw audio and image files. Steganography works

much less effectively, if at all, with efficient

                   – as Windows, macOS, and Linux. One of the reasons,

by millions of people around the globe for a very

it is a Cloud service to create virtual servers.

The interface of AWS is easy to manage that’s why

even a new user with some technical knowledge can

easily create an EC2 instance and configure it with

prefer an operating system, hardware configuration,

and required software packages. Depending upon the

needs users can launch, terminate, and manage

instances and even can scale up or down as demand

                   changes.

Users will charge on an hourly basis for an Ec2

Instance which further depends upon the instance

type, usage duration, and data transfer. To cater

to different kinds of users’ requirements Amazon

An old joke is that Emacs is a text editor with an

operating system included, given that its

extensibility and customization often goes far

beyond traditional text editors. Part of its well-

earned reputation comes from being built in Lisp

which allows it to be expanded to do almost

anything. Despite this in-joke in the community,

though, you will still need an actual operating

system to run it, but not much more than that.

This project uses User-Mode Linux (UML) as a

foundation to load almost nothing other than an

Emacs editor. UML is a virtualization technology

that allows running multiple Linux kernel instances

as separate virtual machines, so once the Linux

environment is started and Emacs is compiled, the

virtual machine can essentially boot straight into

an Emacs environment. Some tools are needed outside

of the Linux kernel like mount which allows the

virtual file system to access the files needed to

build Emacs, but as far as lightweight or

minimalist Linux distributions go this one

definitely gets at least an honorable mention.

Weight-loss drug Mounjaro is all the rage these days,

helping people to shed pounds. Please don’t confuse this

medication with the similarly named “Manjaro” Linux-based

operating system. While Mounjaro helps you lose weight,

Manjaro can help you lose Windows!

Today, Manjaro Linux 22.1 is released. Code-named

“Talos,” it is chock-full of new features. Once again,

this version of the distribution can be had with your

choice of three desktop environments — GNOME, KDE Plasma,

             and Xfce.

One of the highlights of Talos is the GNOME edition,

which boasts several updates to the GNOME 43 series. This

includes fixes and polish that were missing when GNOME 43

was initially released in September 2022. Users can find

detailed changes made to each point-release on the

             Manjaro website.

The redesigned system status menu is one of the most

noticeable changes in GNOME 43. This feature allows users

to quickly change commonly used settings without having

to dig through menus. Users can now see the status of

their settings at a glance, thanks to the new design.

Solus is a fully-fledged, independent rolling

scratch and has its repositories and package

manager, EOPKG. In addition, the distro is

traditionally associated with Budgie as its

                   flagship desktop environment.

While receiving less attention than other leading

desktop-oriented Linux distros such as Ubuntu,

Fedora, Linux Mint, and others, Solus has a devoted

fan base concerned about what has been happening to

their favorite distro in the last month. Here’s

                   what it is all about.

Every Linux distro goes through at lest one big

change at some point in its life span. However,

there is one distro that seems to keep encountering

major turmoil and changes on a regular basis. Let’s

look at the latest news coming from Solus.

There are approximately six billion Linux distros

(or so it seems). Most of them are reskins of

Ubuntu or Arch, with at least one new feature added

or highlighted. I can count on one hand the number

of distros that are actually built from scratch.

                   Solus is one of them.

According to Solus’ website, “Solus is built from

scratch to ensure every tweak, configuration, and

optimization enables the delivery of a singular,

cohesive desktop experience.” All the important

system tools, from the build tools to the package

manager, have been built from scratch. They even

created their own desktop environment named Budgie.

(Budgie had since been spun off to be an

                   independent project.)

GNU Parallel – For people who live life in the

                   parallel lane.

If you like GNU Parallel record a video

testimonial: Say who you are, what you use GNU

Parallel for, how it helps you, and what you like

most about it. Include a command that uses GNU

Parallel if you feel like it.

                   About GNU Parallel

GNU Parallel is a shell tool for executing jobs in

parallel using one or more computers. A job can be

a single command or a small script that has to be

run for each of the lines in the input. The typical

input is a list of files, a list of hosts, a list

of users, a list of URLs, or a list of tables. A

job can also be a command that reads from a pipe.

GNU Parallel can then split the input and pipe it

                   into commands in parallel.

If you use xargs and tee today you will find GNU

Parallel very easy to use as GNU Parallel is

written to have the same options as xargs. If you

write loops in shell, you will find GNU Parallel

may be able to replace most of the loops and make

them run faster by running several jobs in

parallel. GNU Parallel can even replace nested

                   loops.

GNU Parallel makes sure output from the commands is

the same output as you would get had you run the

commands sequentially. This makes it possible to

use output from GNU Parallel as input for other

                   programs.

For example you can run this to convert all jpeg

files into png and gif files and have a progress

                   bar:

                   parallel –bar convert {1} {1.}.{2} ::: *.jpg :::

                   png gif

Or you can generate big, medium, and small

thumbnails of all jpeg files in sub dirs:

                   find . -name ‘*.jpg’ |

                   parallel convert -geometry {2} {1} {1//}/thumb{2}_

                   {1/} :::: – ::: 50 100 200

databases’ command line clients. So far the focus

has been on giving a common way to specify login

                   information (protocol, username, password,

hostname, and port number), size (database and

                   table size), and running queries.

The database is addressed using a DBURL. If

commands are left out you will get that database’s

                   About GNU Niceload

GNU niceload slows down a program when the computer

load average (or other system activity) is above a

certain limit. When the limit is reached the

program will be suspended for some time. If the

limit is a soft limit the program will be allowed

to run for short amounts of time before being

suspended again. If the limit is a hard limit the

program will only be allowed to run when the system

                   is below the limit.

that I had planned to build for a while now. It

consists of simple soft wood for the frame, wooden

beads and brass rods for the beads to slide on.

For those curious: The brass rods are 2mm thick and

12mm apart. The beads are 10mm diameter with a 3mm

hole. The wood for the top and bottom beams are

10x15mm, the middle beam is 10x2mm.

I updated my Gopherhole a bit. I added a new

                         article to my /Gopher

                         Novice/ series. It’s about zines because I

                         had thought that there were

absent on the 90′s Gophersphere. And it was

                         wrong. As I’ve seen on

                         [Directory of Electronic Journals,

                         Newsletters, and Academic

Discussion Lists, Tom 4] there was a

                         significant increase in

publications of that type. And many of them

                         were published on

                         Gophersphere then.
