§ Linux-libre turns 15!⠀➾
It was February 2008 when Jeff Moe announced Linux-libre, a project to share
the efforts that freedom-respecting distros had to undertake to drop the
nonfree bits distributed as part of the kernel Linux.
https://web.archive.org/web/1/lists.autistici.org/message/
20080221.002845.467ba592.en.html
“For fifteen years, the Linux-libre project has remained dedicated to
providing a kernel that respects everyone’s freedom and has become an
essential part of the free software movement. Linux-libre is widely
used by those who value their freedom to use, study, change, and
share software without restrictions or limitations. These freedoms
are essential to creating a just society.”
— Jason Self
Since around 1996, Linux has carried sourceless firmware encoded as sequences
of numbers disguised as source code. UTUTO and gNewSense pioneered the efforts
of removing them. Cleaning Linux up is a substantial amount of work, so the
existence of Linux-libre has alleviated one of the main difficulties in
maintaining GNU+Linux distros that abide by the GNU Free Software Distribution
Guidelines. The Linux-libre compiled kernel distributions maintained by Jason
Self, Freesh (.deb), liberRTy (low-latency .deb) and RPMFreedom (.rpm), make it
easy for users of other GNU+Linux distros to take a step towards freedom when
their hardware is not too user-hostile.
“Thanks to Linux-libre, we have entirely libre GNU+Linux distros.
Thanks to Linux-libre, people like me who are not kernel hackers can
install one of those distros and have a computer which never runs a
nonfree program on the CPU. (Provided we use LibreJS as well to
reject nonfree Javascript programs that web sites send us.)”
— Richard Stallman
Early pieces of firmware in Linux ran peripheral devices, but some of the blobs
loaded by Linux nowadays reconfigure the primary central processing units and
others contain an entire operating system for the peripherals’ CPUs, including
a copy of the kernel Linux itself and several other freedom-depriving programs!
After years of our denouncing the social, technical, and legal risks out of
Linux’s misbehavior, most of the blobs got moved to separate files, still part
of the kernel Linux, and then to separate packages, which mitigates some of the
legal risks, but the problem keeps growing: more and more devices depend on
nonfree firmware and thus remain under exclusive and proprietary control by
their suppliers.
§ Challenge⠀➾
For 27 years, the nonfree versions of Linux have shown that tolerating blobs
and making it easy for users to install and accept them makes users
increasingly dependent on user-hostile, blob-requiring devices for their
computing. Refusing to give these devices’ suppliers what they wish, namely
your money and control over your computing, is more likely to succeed at
changing their practices if more users refuse.
If you’re the kind of software freedom supporter who demands respect for your
freedom, keep on enjoying the instant gratification that GNU Linux-libre
affords you, and supporting (or being!) those who refurbish old computers and
build new ones to respect our autonomy.
However, if you’re of the kind for whom last-generation computers are hard to
resist, even though you’d prefer if they were more respectful of your freedom,
you may wish to consider a delayed gratification challenge: if you and your
friends resist hostile computers now, you may get more respectful ones later,
for yourselves and for all of us; if you don’t, the next generations will
likely be even more hostile. Are you up for the challenge?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_gratification
§ Present and Future⠀➾
GNU Linux-libre releases are currently prepared with scripts that automate the
cleaning-up and part of the verification. For each upstream major and stable
release, we run the scripts, updating them as needed, and publish them, along
with the cleaning-up logs and the cleaned-up sources, in a git repository. Each
source release is an independent tag, as in, there are no branches for cleaned-
up sources. This is so we can quickly retract releases if freedom bugs are
found.
We have plans to change the cleaning-up process and the repository structure in
the future: we’re (slowly) preparing to move to a rewritten git repository, in
which, for each commit in upstream Linux main and stable repositories, there
will be a corresponding cleaned-up commit in ours. Undesirable bits are going
to be cleaned up at the commit corresponding to the one in which upstream
introduced or modified them, and other modifications will be checked and
integrated unchanged, mirroring the upstream commit graph, with “git replace”
mappings for individual commits and, perhaps, also for cleaned-up files.
This is expected to enable us to track upstream development very closely, to
get stable and major releases out nearly instantly and often automatically and
to enable Linux developers to clone our freed repository instead of our
upstream to write and test their changes. The same techniques used to create
the cleaned-up repository can be used to fix freedom bugs in it.
§ Artwork⠀➾
Jason Self has made several beautiful pictures of his version of Freedo, our
light-blue penguin mascot, and we’ve used them for our recent releases.
Marking the beginning of the week in which we celebrate 15 years of Linux-
libre, we had the pleasure of publishing a major release, 6.2-gnu, codenamed
“la quinceañera”, with a picture of Freedo dressed up for the occasion.
https://www.fsfla.org/pipermail/linux-libre/2023-February/003502.html
But there’s more! He also made a commemorative black-and-white wallpaper with
classic Freedo, also dressed up for the occasion. Check them out, and feel free
to tune the colors to your liking!
https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/#news
He also modeled a 3D Freedo in Blender, and we’re looking for someone who could
3D-print it and get it to the FSF office in time for the LibrePlanet
conference. Rumor has it that Richard Stallman is going to auction it off to
raise funds for the FSF! Can you help? █

§ About GNU Linux-libre⠀➾
GNU Linux-libre is a GNU package maintained by Alexandre Oliva, on behalf of
FSFLA, and by Jason Self. It releases cleaned-up versions of Linux, suitable
for use in distributions that comply with the Free Software Distribution
Guidelines published by the GNU project, and by users who wish to run Free
versions of Linux on their GNU systems. The project offers cleaning-up scripts,
Free sources, binaries for some GNU+Linux distributions, and artwork with GNU
and the Linux-libre mascot: Freedo, the clean, Free and user-friendly light-
blue penguin. Visit our web site and Be Free!

§ About the GNU Operating System and Linux⠀➾
Richard Stallman announced in September 1983 the plan to develop a Free
Software Unix-like operating system called GNU. GNU is the only operating
system developed specifically for the sake of users’ freedom.
http://www.gnu.org/
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/the-gnu-project.html
In 1992, the essential components of GNU were complete, except for one, the
kernel. When in 1992 the kernel Linux was re-released under the GNU GPL, making
it Free Software, the combination of GNU and Linux formed a complete Free
operating system, which made it possible for the first time to run a PC without
non-Free Software. This combination is the GNU+Linux system.

§ About FSFLA⠀➾
Free Software Foundation Latin America joined in 2005 the international FSF
network, previously formed by Free Software Foundations in the United States,
in Europe and in India. These sister organizations work in their corresponding
geographies towards promoting the same Free Software ideals and defending the
same freedoms for software users and developers, working locally but
cooperating globally.

Resolvectl itself doesn’t have any sort of ‘trace’
or ‘debug’ option that will explain what it’s doing
during name resolution, but you can gingerly turn
on debug logging for resolved with ‘resolvectl log-
level debug’ (and then hastily turn it off
afterward), and if you’re lucky not too many other
name resolutions will be going on at the same time.
Eventually I was able to get lucky and track down
what was going on, which was that systemd-resolved
was trying to resolve these names by doing Link-
Local Multicast Name Resolution (LLMNR) over my
home machine’s DSL PPPoE link. Naturally there was
nothing responding to them, so resolved had to wait
for a several-second timeout before it could
declare that there was no such name out there.
Turning LLMNR off on my PPPoE link made the delays
go away, so now nonexistent names fail more or less
immediately.

Ha ha, tonight I was thinking “this is it!”; will release
easyOS
5.0. However, some more testing revealed a problem.
Feodor reported some
help files remaining in French when he changed from
French to English,
which I reported in previous blog post:
https://bkhome.org/news/202302/some-little-tweaks-before-
releasing-easyos-50.html
What I also discovered, and maybe Feodor mentioned this,
don’t recall, was some desktop icon labels remained in
French.
Oh dear, that turned out to be a difficult bug. In
French, the
“trash” icon is labeled “Déchets”. Changing locale to
en_US in

Just like the previous versions in the 6.x series,
Linux Lite 6.4 will be based on the Ubuntu 22.04
LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) operating system series, more
specifically on the Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS point
release, but it sticks with the long-term supported
Linux 5.15 LTS kernel series instead of the newer
Linux 5.19 HWE kernel./p>
There are a few improvements in Linux Lite 6.4
compared to Linux Lite 6.2, such as the adoption of
Zstd compression for all of the in-house built
applications to provide users, especially those
with slower computers, with significantly faster
updates.

bugs. Since our previous release in October, many
of you have flocked to our bug tracker and reported

According to Theo de Raadt, we only have 4 active
OpenBSD developers in Canada. Theo de Raadt and Bob
Beck, both Canadian citizens and long-time OpenBSD

with regards to OpenBSD. But that just isn’t true,
historically or currently.
Like all open source software projects, OpenBSD is
inherently an international collaboration. Yet, a
nation can still stand out in an international
project, and can certainly have its history and
contributions highlighted, without comparing these
to the history and contributions of another
country. Comparisons are not obligatory, and
there’s no hierarchy being created here. But a
special history and contributions can nonetheless
be recognized and highlighted.

works fine, I’m assuming I’m just seeing that

Arch, Fedora, openSUSE, Slackware, or any of the
others, as long as they have the Flatpak backend
installed, any and all Flatpaks will work on their
distro of choice.

Danny’s best friend is Joe Pearson, “a thin, sad-

Miller, whose father, an astronomer, also teaches
at Midston. We can tell right away that Irene knows
at least as much about science as Danny does—and
way more than Joe, whose main academic interests
are literary. As the story begins, Danny is
demonstrating a recent invention of his: a piece of
wood, suspended by clothesline from a pair of
pulleys attached to the ceiling, into which he has
inserted two pens. When he writes with either pen,
the other creates a duplicate on a second sheet of
paper. (This device is called a polygraph; Thomas
Jefferson owned several.) “Now I can do our
arithmetic homework while you’re doing our English
homework,” he tells Joe. “It’ll save us about half
an hour for baseball practice.” Joe runs home to
get more clothesline, and Danny dreams of bigger
things: “If only I could build some kind of a robot
to do all our homework for us. . . .”
The boys don’t perceive a moral dilemma, but Irene
does. “It—it doesn’t seem exactly honest to me,”
she says. Danny disagrees, and cites his landlord:
“Professor Bullfinch says that homework doesn’t
have much to do with how a kid learns things at
school.”

Bob Gibson was one of the three or four greatest pitchers

Series, once in 1964 and again in 1967. Gibson set the
modern record for the lowest earned run average in a
year. He was deemed so unhittable in the 1968 season that
the league’s owners ordered radical changes to the game,
including shrinking the strike zone and lowering the
height of the pitcher’s mound. He was named to the All-
Star game nine times and voted into the Baseball Hall of
Fame on the first ballot. But still Bob Gibson would have
preferred to play basketball. The reason might be found
in Gibson’s experiences in Columbus, Georgia. To read

an image from that picture. It’s a curiously beautiful
artwork as well as an ultimate expression of the current
obsession with the technology, and we rather like it.

Vanessa first became aware scammers were pretending to be

Digital twins aren’t your run-of-the-mill computer
models. They are closely tied to their physical

to inspect a physical machine while it’s in operation,
its digital twin is the next best thing.
In recent years, digital twins of manufacturing machinery
have armed engineers with an abundance of operational
data, helping them accomplish a variety of feats (without
impacting performance or safety), including predicting
when parts will start to break down and require
maintenance.
In addition to spotting routine indicators of wear and

manufacturing data, the authors of the study say.

A basic WireGuard deployment also works on what’s
basically device based authentication. Each endpoint

these identities are onerous enough to set up that you do
it once and then don’t touch it afterward. If you want to
rotate identities, invalidate them, or stop accepting
them until people re-authenticate somehow, you’ll need to
add some sort of system on top (eg). However, the process
of issuing or registering WireGuard identities can be
driven by people and tied to them, and if the devices are
single-user devices, this comes almost as close to your
WireGuard environment authenticating people as a
traditional non-MFA VPN does.

perhaps the most famous modern example of hostility to

blasphemy, the novel remains banned in at least a dozen
countries from Senegal to Singapore. Book-banning remains a

MacOS_or_Windows_|_ZDNET⠀⇛
Back when I first started using Linux in 1997, the open-
source operating system was primarily used by computer
science students, hackers, and programmers who wanted an
alternative to the Windows operating system. It was
serious and geared toward serious work. Fast forward to
now and Linux is used for everything. Why? Simply put,
it’s more flexible than Windows.
Linux can be bent and twisted into just about anything.
But Linux is not only more flexible, reliable, and secure
than the competition, but it’s also a lot more fun. I’ve
spent many a day (and weekend) tweaking the Linux desktop
simply because I could.
Some of the desktops I’ve configured have been so amazing
that friends wanted to know how they could achieve the
same look, only to be disappointed that their operating
system of choice wasn’t capable of pulling off such a
feat.

Canonical’s decision to force all official Ubuntu flavors
to ditch Flatpak support by default, also staying that
future Ubuntu releases won’t include support for Flatpak

have to manually add Flatpak support after the
installation.
Next week will be really exciting with lots of cool news.
Until then, you can read the hottest news of this week

who love tinkering with their Mac hardware. The
Apple Silicon chipsets are now supported, which
means Linux installs will be along in the near

“Linux has been happily running on Intel based
harder, including the older Mac platform, for many
a year. ARM-based hardware has been in rather short
supply (outside of smartphones, tablets, and some
experimental platforms). The introduction of Apple
Silicon offered a hardware base, but Apple’s
restrictions around another OS using the GPU meant
the masses had to wait until a solution was found.

§ Background
Silver-Platter makes it easier to
publish automated changes to repositories. However,
in its default mode, the
only option for reviewing changes before publishing
them is to run in dry-run mode.
This can be quite cumbersome if you have a lot
of repositories.
A new “batch” mode now makes it possible to
generate a large number of changes
against different repositories using a script,
review and optionally alter the
diffs, and then all publish them (and potentially
refresh them later if
conflicts appear).

developer Gustavo Iñiguez Goya allowing me to

the_interactive
application_firewall_OpenSnitch is now available in
Debian
Testing, soon to become the next stable release of
Debian.
This is a package which set up a network firewall
on one or more
machines, which is controlled by a graphical user
interface that will
ask the user if a program should be allowed to
connect to the local
network or the Internet. If some background daemon
is trying to dial
home, it can be blocked from doing so with a simple
mouse click, or by
default simply by not doing anything when the GUI
question dialog pop
up. A list of all programs discovered using the
network is provided
in the GUI, giving the user an overview of how the
machine(s) programs
use the network.
OpenSnitch was uploaded for NEW processing about a
month ago, and I
had little hope of it getting accepted and shaping
up in time for the
package freeze, but the Debian ftpmasters proved to
be amazingly quick
at checking out the package and it was accepted
into the archive about
week after the first upload. It is now team
maintained under the Go
language team umbrella. A few fixes to the default
setup is only in
Sid, and should migrate to Testing/Bookworm in a
week.

vehemently deny the existence of an issue that
has been independently verified by many. This
verification includes packet traces and binary
analysis of system processes, by the way.
Moreover, an Apple Xcode engineer publicly

There are a number of reasons why you

issue.

I have always been bad at organizing my life. It
can be hard for me to know what to do and when to
do it. This is a particularly big problem for me
because of executive disfunction. There are many
ways in which I could go about keeping track of
what needs to be done, but they all boil down to
some sort of calendar system. That being said, each
system has you think about things in a different
way.
I have tried using my calendar app, various todo
apps, and physical journaling. Each one has their
pros and cons, but they all ultimately failed me in
the sense that I have gotten out of the habbit of
using them. Life has been getting overwelming
recently and so I thought that it would be a good
idea to get back into the habbit of using one of
these.

# ⚓ The_Two_Steves,_Revisited⠀⇛
The story of Jobs and Wozniak soldering away in a
garage is such an iconic tale… It inspired me
greatly, actually shaping my entire life. I
scraped, borrowed and stole money to save up for my
Apple ][+, and in the 80′s I actually tried (not
realizing it at the time) to re-live this story,
dropping out of high school and taking on the role
of Jobs, suiting up for meetings by day (East
coast) and wielding soldering iron by night…
I didn’t get to stop and think about it much back
then, or even try to verify the legend until the
90s (and I was on the East coast, away from the
action). It was a big shock. I was an Apple fanboy
until then — putting up with the closed
architecture and the insanely high prices (as a
developer I was forced to buy a couple of multi-
thousand-dollar Macs every year).

# ⚓ Additional_features_decentralized_services_needs_–
practical_web3_ep.2⠀⇛
First I tried to imagin an email like service
on GNUnet and have it actually be better then
clearnet. I mean that by, getting SMTP to
“work” over GNUnet is easy. Just use CADET as
a TCP replacement. However, this does not buy
us much in terms of usability or privacy.
Users still are relying on a single service
provider; if they go down everything the user
has disappears. And the service provider
still knows the user’s peer ID (IP address of
the GNUnet world). The only benefit this have
is CADET can route traffic under a very
restrictive environment.
Clearly proxying clearnet protocols over
GNUnet won’t work. We need designs native to
decentralization.
Something like `libgnunetchat` works better.
It is a fully decentralized chat system
native to GNUnet. However, unlike SMTP-over-
GNUnet, `libgnunetchat` does not replicate
chat history and uses your Egos (virtual
identities) as user accounts. Thus you can’t
‘login’ to the same account on multiple
devices, nor retrieve old messages, at least
not without some extremely complicated setup.

posting on social media I don’t hate (right

I created “Nixer”, after I was finished with
“Nix”, to see, how far you can go to remove
most functionality from a website, until it
wouldn’t make sense anymore.
Both themes are optimized for fast build
speeds, therefore doesn’t have either SCSS,
includes, or any dependencies.
Their purpose is to be minimalistic (“Nix”)
or hard-core minimalistic (“Nixer”), single-
author themes. Because there is no menu,
pages can be manually linked in the body of
`index.md`. But “Nixer” users won’t be doing
that, because the whole point of this theme
is to not display anything more than just the
content of posts and a list of posts.
They implement as little changes as possible
from the default browser settings. They only
do it to improve legibility.
